Two Years Down, One Lifetime to Go

OM International
David*
During summer camp two years ago, when the field was a little older, and the kids playing were a little younger, “Character Training” time held the key to new life for one specific player: David Szep*.

Terry Lingenhoel, who has served with OM Hungary since 1991, shared the story of David’s* decision to follow Jesus. “I was hitting to the infield and he was playing first base. As I hit the ball to him, I realised that he was crying,” Terry said.

David* told Steve, a fellow coach, that he had ignored his grandfather, who had come to the field to bring him snacks, and now felt guilty. The coach took him home to apologise to his grandfather, and then asked him if he was okay. David* replied, “I hate apologising, but forgiveness feels good.” He went on to recall other instances of rudeness toward people besides his grandfather. David* had heard Christians speak of the forgiveness of sins through Jesus’ death, so knew that he must accept Jesus to receive forgiveness and new life.

Later that evening, he approached Trevor, a Canadian who had shared the gospel during “Character Training” time, and asked if he was a priest. When Trevor replied “No,” David* said that he wanted to talk with someone about God. Trevor explained, “Well, I’m not a priest, but I can talk to you about God.” He wanted forgiveness from God, and so the two prayed together.

David* then started attending church and meeting regularly with Terry. Recently, his decision not to attend church has challenged those opportunities for growth. Terry now also struggles to disciple him without impeding on parental authority.

David* shared that this year’s camp experience has been encouraging. He has enjoyed learning about sacrifice and respect during character training, and is trying to understand God’s unconditional love. He is the only member of his family who believes in Jesus, so it’s been hard for him to step out in faith at times. He knows that Terry is a very wise man, and often approaches him when difficulties surface at school and home.
