Dear partners in prayer,

Greetings in Jesus from the beautiful town of Keswick in the English Lake District. We are in the second week of this three-week Bible Convention. Over its 134 years, hundreds of people have heard the call of God to ministry; missionary societies and Bible colleges have been established through its discussions. This year people are once again responding to the call to ministry involvement. I have been chairman of the convention for nine years, the maximum allowed. It has been a privilege to serve and I will continue on the council for a few further years. It is a busy time as I spend the mornings and evenings on Convention business and the afternoon on OM business. Here is some of our prayer news from around the world.

World faiths

Afghanistan: Military action has been stepped up this summer, along with media slogans like: Winning hearts and minds. It takes more than military action to lift this severely impoverished nation out of decades of the vicious downward cycle of war.

We have many opportunities to get among the people: self-help groups and micro loans in rural areas; education and vocational training for the disabled; courses on safe pregnancy and birth; adult literacy, and teaching university professors English. We want Afghans transformed through the awareness of their inherent worth and dignity as people.

At present we face a dilemma: the opportunities are there but the workers are not! We need professionals to join our teams. North Africa: Kerim* lives in a small mountain village. Somehow, a package of Christian literature - one of thousands distributed to immigrants - made its way from Europe. After hearing the Gospel message on the radio and then reading the materials, Kerim contacted the distributors. Johan*, a local worker, visited Kerim to encourage and see how best to support him. Kerim went away to talk with Johan about the Lord and returned a different man. His face glowed and he was filled with joy. Kerim's family started asking questions, and when he finally shared his decision to follow Jesus, they became very upset. They send him into the mountains to tend the sheep for four to six weeks at a time. Kerim is often cold, lonely, weather-beaten, and weary. However, he continues to praise God. He even makes little crosses to hang around the necks of the sheep and uses the time to practice preaching to his sheep! Pray that the Lord will fill him with songs, like those of David, and that he will know the love and fellowship of Jesus during these long times of isolation.

Turkey: Another exciting TACO tour creatively proclaimed the gospel as 18 internationals displayed the unity of Christ amid a variety of countries, cultures, languages and denominations. The concert venues included an open-air amphitheatre, an international church, a university spring festival, a rock club, a cultural centre and Turkish national TV. Many great conversations happened along the way. Some of the performances were covered by local newspapers. Those interested in the gospel were sent materials and a Bible Correspondence Course and contact made with local churches and sponsors for follow-up. Pray for all who came to the concerts.

Eylem* is a 26-year-old secretary in a doctor's office. Through a friend of her father she read the Gospel of John, contacted the Knowing God website and was introduced to a leader from a church in her city. Deeply touched after a few meetings, she believed in Jesus Christ. She still hasn't told her family but meets regularly with local Christians and joins the Bible Study and prayer meetings. Praise God for the fruitfulness of this website ministry. Pray for Eylem, her family and many like them to find salvation.

Turning Point (UK): The government has introduced new criteria for those wanting to study in the UK. While OM has met all requirements, we are still waiting for a sponsorship license, without which none of our students from outside the EU can apply for student visas. Pray that we will soon see this license granted and that all visa applications are quickly processed and approved.

"A Turkish man came to our booktable. I asked if he would like a New Testament and he replied that he had already read half of it! He was very excited when I invited him to our church service." Jakob (CH)

Many conversations and the distribution of Gospel literature continues to take place. Pray that the hearts and lives of those we meet would be prepared to hear and read His words and that they would give their lives to Him.

Bangladesh: Key leaders met in June to work on a five-year plan for development programmes before submission for government approval this December. About 200 students come to our various vocational and computer training centres daily to learn new skills. These courses run for a minimum of three months. Over this time, close relationships are established between our trainers and the participants, giving many opportunities to share about God.

In May, a cyclone hit the south; over 180 people died, and crops and houses were devastated. Sadly, we are already operating beyond capacity and do not have teams based in that area, so could not get directly involved in relief work. Our hearts go out to those who have lost so much. Please pray for those working and living in that area; there are so many affected people, and the need is so great!

Pakistan: In a village where the team is hoping to install water pumps and wash rooms, the father of believer AS*, who had previously been very negative, said: "I have heard a lot about you. After meeting you today, I am impressed with your attitude. Whenever you visit here, our doors are open for you and you can stay with us overnight." In the village of 350 people, the team want to install ten hand pumps and a women's toilet, hoping that the village will see God's love through this practical care.

The women's team regularly return to specific cities. One lady told a story to another lady, whilst drawing with henna on her hand. The lady said: "I will remember this story so long as the henna remains on my hand," as she repeated the story back to the team! At the same time, the team men were talking to the ladies' husbands; one man said: "I was interested to gather information about your religion. I am happy to receive Injeel (New Testament); I will study it."

Europe

Bosnia: For years, the church in Bihac has been mostly women. Last summer Mujo* became a follower of Jesus and has grown in the Lord ever since. Some months ago two young men, Mufid* and Dino* started to come to our meetings. Mufid is open towards Biblical faith, reads the Bible regularly, and hangs out with believing relatives.

When Dino's mother became a believer, she started eagerly praying for her family. Dino has problems with alcohol, doesn't have good friends, and finds it hard to get a job. The willingness of believers to help him has made an impact. These three young men will go to a summer camp for youth - an effective ministry of evangelical churches. Many are far from each other and believers are isolated. The camps bring them all together! To read more about the camps visit www.emekberaka.org. Pray that each participant will receive a personal touch?from God??and that many will come to know Jesus during the camps.

He really does listen to prayer, this God of yours!

France: Pierre* has spent much of his life working with French singers, songwriters and actors, but now lives an isolated, downtrodden existence. Mark* let Pierre know he was praying for him, instead of responding immediately with practical help. For some weeks, Mark told him that he was praying for him, bringing to God every difficulty Pierre faced, including unpaid bills, eviction threats, and personal hygiene and sight problems. Answers to these prayers soon became evident: vision in his right eye improved and the drop-in centre got him new glasses. He was exempted from local taxes and started making more effort with his appearance. Pierre responded, "He really does listen to prayer, this God of yours."

Austria: Fifteen Christians from three different churches spent seven weeks memorizing Mark's Gospel. Without a stage, costumes or props, they were to re-enact Jesus' life - one and a half hours of intense drama that ended with the women at the empty tomb proclaiming, "He is risen; he lives!"

"It was amazing to watch the effect the process had on the actors," said Renate, "After each service, this was THE topic of conversation: usually something someone had noticed for the first time, and which had to be shared. Within 30 hours the drama had to come together. Believe me, it is one thing to read the Gospel, but acting it takes it deep into our innermost beings." About 200 attended the showings in a local restaurant, and many were touched as they saw Jesus in a new light. Praise God for the open doors Gilgian and Renate Oester have to share Jesus in their community, and for their creativity in reaching out to others.

Montenegro: It's been almost two years since the OM team started a team in Bar, the main port city, and progress is being made. The official opening of a youth centre on 28 May welcomed visitors from other NGOs, neighbours and friends that team members have invested in since their arrival. Children have Bible Club on Saturdays, while teenagers and adults participate in English and German evening sessions. Pray for the OM team to reach out to more people in the community, and that others will find comfort and peace in this meeting place.

Slovakia: The Lumen Music Festival organised by the Catholic Church was attended by about 5000 young people, 1000 of whom visited OM's Bus4Life. "Many of them left with a book or two in their hands - the highest-ever book sales for a Slovakian bus trip,"reported Ego Mayer, the Bus4Life driver, Gabriel* was browsing through the section of English books when Kristi* approached him. He was searching for an English Bible, but was concerned because the Bibles didn't have the Pope's approval on the cover page. She related, "Gabriel didn't buy a Bible but said he wanted Christ in his life. I gave him a copy of the New Testament with Psalms in English. He returned later with a little token of appreciation: a pin that said "we are the perfume of Christ"".

Lifehope (UK): Atonya Sims started a ministry amongst Poles in Birmingham about two years ago, even though she had never been to Poland. "Some I helped with English learning, others with advocacy on behalf of their children, and others with legal issues. It all depends on what the needs are, and how best I can help them." Although Atonya visited Poland briefly last year, she has decided to return for three months this year, not only to get to know the Polish culture and language better, but also to serve the local church wherever possible.

Resourcing

Singapore: An OM partner church, which already supports 300 Dalit school children in India, was recently challenged to get more involved. Joseph D'Souza spoke to 200+ young people who listened keenly as he described the work among the Dalits, challenging them to pray that in this generation the Dalits will find freedom from oppression. The 3,000-member church, with two Sunday morning services, listened with 'pin drop silence' as Joseph illustrated the Lord's Prayer and spoke about the Dalit situation. The church is preparing to send a 40-foot container of good used clothing to India.

OM arranged a high tea for 60 pastors and leaders where Joseph spoke on the subject of Justice, Human Rights and Kingdom Mission. Pray for the follow up of Joseph's visit, especially with Christian leaders. Joseph is the speaker at Australia's largest mission weekend, ReachOut, from 14-16 August. Pray that many would be impacted. Joseph will visit various cities afterwards; pray that doors will open in churches, schools, with politicians and donors.

Relief & development

Central Asia: Suhrob*, a little boy with cerebral palsy, was one-year-old when his mother brought him to the Early Intervention Program run by the All About Children project. For nine months, specialists worked on his physical development and fine motor skills. One day the mother returned to the project with a beaming smile, a plate of cookies and a heart full of appreciation: her son had begun to walk! He sang songs learnt at the program and her family was thrilled with his progress. Praise God for therapists who use their skills for God in this way.

Afghanistan: The Birth Life Saving Skills (BLiSS) programme is changing lives in villages. Shy, uneducated women eagerly report: "We no longer deliver in dirty places. We're careful to use a clean plastic sheet, knife, and plastic gloves. We wash the baby's mouth and nose when born, put erythromycin in its eyes and cover him/her to keep warm. Now we understand when the mother or baby is in danger, and we take them quickly to the nearby clinic if a problem arises, rather than waiting until it's too late. Our husbands didn't accept this at first, but now they listen and allow us to go to the clinic. If the baby isn't breathing at birth, we know to tap his feet and legs, talk loudly to him, clear his mouth and nose and blow gentle puffs of air into him to stimulate him to breathe."

Emerging mission movements

Central Asia: The Silk Road Summer Challenge from 1-18 July involved 100 participants from Central Asian countries taking the Gospel to 20 different destinations. Talgat*, 18, came to know Jesus at 4 years old, after watching the Jesus film with his mother. "Everything is boiling inside me," he said. "For the first time I will go to a new country, without my family, to share the gospel. I am really excited." Pray for great fruitfulness through their witness and in their lives.

Peru: Guatemala Country Leader Pilar Castro reports, "God was faithful in our Peru evangelistic project in June. Two weeks before, we received an American medical team in two villages in Guatemala, so we did not have time to raise finances. Yet our Father provided all we needed and more! Twenty-one Guatemalans and Salvadorans worked with five churches in different places; we returned to Guatemala with new vision." The team reached out to over 1,000 Peruvian men, women and children; almost 400 made decisions to receive Christ. When a group of men asked to borrow the team's colourful evangelistic soccer ball they agreed, but said they first wanted to explain the ball's colours. At the end of the talk, they challenged the men to receive Jesus, and all 20 agreed! The team gave training to 125 church leaders and members in creative evangelism, leadership, youth issues and marriage.

China: OM's vision is to mobilise the Chinese to serve globally. Two Chinese serve on the Doulos; two more will join Logos Hope in August. Hope's family were actively involved in OM's relief work in Sichuan province, helping to rebuild schools after the devastating earthquake in May 2008. Her father has connected OM leaders with many other businessmen and Christian leaders. Pray for Hope and her cousin as they apply for visas. Neither has been outside of China before.

Costa Rica: "Thank you for coming. You provide such a wonderful break from our reality," said Candy, a young mother attending OM's women's ministry in Las Tablas, a community that suffers from poverty, drug and alcohol abuse, commercial sex work and domestic violence against women and children. OM women meet every two weeks with a group of 15-25 women, mainly young mothers, at a communal centre owned by the local church. The time spent in the Word of God makes a difference in their lives as they receive truth applicable to their reality. Pray that God's presence would transform more lives.

Think again: Mission in a messy world

There has been chaos outside our office for the past year: roads torn up and traffic rerouted. As of 12/12/2010 (so we are told!) renewed roads, an expanded train station, and the brand new Tram 12 to the airport will offset the months of inconvenience we have endured.

All this, of course, did not just happen. Someone several years ago had a vision for a better transportation system for our area. The only way to get there, though, was through a period of controlled chaos.

To be fair, neither control nor chaos correctly describe the situation. Regular updates and advance notice on road detours and parking changes point to a thorough master plan. All that, however, does not change the mess outside!

Responding to the mess

How do I respond? I could ignore the changes, drive where I used to and walk where the sidewalks used to be. If I do make it to the office, it might not be in one piece, and perhaps with a fine from the police. I could also trudge around the mess, focus on the inconvenience, shout angry words at the workers, and ask whoever cares to listen, "What in the world are they doing?" I will get to the office, but few will accompany me and I won't win any friends among the labourers.

A better option is to remind myself of the future, imagining the new tramline rather than present traffic delays and mud on my shoes. This attitude makes me more pleasant to travel with and might even help others to focus on the bright future, not the current bother.

Mission in a messy world

This illustrates an important principle: how we view the future has a big impact on how we go about mission. The world is somewhat like the construction zone surrounding the OM Switzerland office. One way to enter into mission is to ignore the reality of change. If I go about mission as if 'Victoria still rules the waves' or the 2008/09 economic crisis had never occurred, if I ignore the amazing growth of the global Church or any of dozens of other factors, my journey will be slowed and, sooner or later, I will crash into something.

Another way is to loudly complain, "Look at what those [your choice] are doing to ruin things!" Granted, sin and sinners are making a mess of the world. But just as honking my horn and shouting choice words at construction workers outside my office will neither change their lives nor clean up the mess, an disengaged, angry reaction to the world is unlikely to bring about significant, lasting change in individual lives or society as a whole.

Instead, I can recognize that God sovereignly works out his purpose by involving people like you and me, the called-out harvest workers (Matthew 9:38). To our amazement, even Pharaoh and militant Babylonians help proclaim his Name and Glory in the whole earth (Exodus 9:16; Habakkuk 1:6; 2:14).

This view of the future allows me to better cooperate with God as he works in today's chaotic world, using for his glory even the tyrants I most despise. And, while neither giving an inch in condoning oppression nor trying to treat biblical prophecy as an early edition of tomorrow's newspaper, I focus on God's eternal, transforming, resurrection-based hope while walking through the construction zone mess of life.

INFORME INTERNACIONAL AGOSTO 2009

Queridos compañeros de oración,

Saludos en el nombre de Jesús desde el hermoso pueblo de Keswick en el Distrito Lake Inglés. Estamos en la segunda semana de las tres planificadas para la Convención Bíblica. Por los últimos 134 años, cientos de personas han escuchado el llamado de Dios al ministerio y sociedades misioneras, así como seminarios bíblicos han sido establecidos a través de los debates en esta convención. Este año, una vez más, la gente está respondiendo al llamado a involucrarse en el ministerio. He sido el presidente de la convención por nueve años, el máximo permitido. Ha sido un privilegio servir como tal y continuaré en el concejo por algunos años más. Es para mí un tiempo muy ocupado, ya que paso las mañanas y las noches tratando temas de la convención y por la tarde, temas de OM. Aquí hay algunas de nuestras noticias de oración de alrededor del mundo.

Creencias mundiales

Afganistán: La acción militar se ha incrementado este verano, así como los slogans mediáticos, tales como: Ganar los corazones y las mentes. Se necesita más que acciones militares para levantar a esta empobrecida nación que ha pasado por décadas de guerras.

Tenemos muchas oportunidades de estar al lado de la gente: grupos de ayuda mutua y micro créditos en áreas rurales; educación y entrenamiento vocacional para minusválidos; cursos de embarazos y partos seguros; alfabetización de adultos, y enseñanza de inglés a profesores universitarios. Queremos que los afganos sean transformados a través de crear conciencia de su valor y dignidad inherente como personas.

Norte de África: Kerim* vive en una pequeña aldea. De alguna manera, un paquete de literatura cristiana (uno de miles distribuidos a inmigrantes), le llegó desde Europa. Luego de escuchar el mensaje del evangelio en la radio y de leer el material, Kerim se contacto con los distribuidores de dicho material. Johan*, un obrero local, visitó a Kerim para animarlo y averiguar cómo podía ayudarlo de la mejor manera. Ambos salieron a caminar y a hablar del Señor y cuando regresaron, Kerim era un hombre nuevo. Su rostro brillaba y estaba lleno de gozo. La familia de Kerim comenzó a hacerle preguntas, y cuando finalmente les compartió de su decisión de seguir a Jesús, ellos se sintieron ofendidos. Lo enviaron a pastorear ovejas en las montañas por cuatro o seis semanas cada vez. Muchas veces se siente solo, tiene frío, el clima lo golpea y a menudo está muy cansado. Aún así, sigue alabando al Señor. Fabrica pequeñas cruces y se las cuelga al cuello de las ovejas, y utiliza el tiempo para practicar predicándoles a sus ovejas. Ora para que el Señor lo llene de canciones, como las de David, y que él pueda conocer el amor y la comunión de Jesús durante esos largos tiempos de aislamiento.

Turquía: En medio de otra entusiasta gira de TACO (una banda cristiana de música), los participantes proclamaron el evangelio mostrando la unidad de Cristo en medio de la diversidad de países, culturas, idiomas y denominaciones. El lugar del concierto contó con un anfiteatro a cielo abierto, una iglesia internacional, un festival universitario de primavera, un club de rock, un centro cultural y la TV nacional turca. Se sostuvieron muchas buenas conversaciones durante el evento. Algunas de las presentaciones fueron cubiertas por los periódicos locales. Los interesados en el evangelio recibieron un curso Bíblico por Correspondencia y fueron contactados con iglesias locales para su seguimiento. Ora por todos los que vinieron al concierto.

Eylem* tiene 26 años de edad y es secretaria de un doctor. A través de un amigo de su padre ella leyó el evangelio de Juan, luego visitó el sitio web Knowing God (Conocer a Dios) y fue presentada al líder de una iglesia en su ciudad. El mensaje le llegó profundamente y, luego de algunas reuniones, ella creyó en Jesús. Ella todavía no le comunicó la decisión a su familia, pero se reúne regularmente con cristianos locales y asiste a las reuniones de Estudio Bíblico y oración. Alaba a Dios por los resultados del ministerio del sitio web. Ora por Eylem y su familia, para que muchos encuentren salvación.

Punto de Cambio (RU): El gobierno ha establecido un nuevo criterio para aquellos que quieran estudiar en el Reino Unido (RU). Mientras que OM ha cumplido con todos los requisitos, estamos esperando que se nos conceda una licencia de patrocinio, sin la cual ninguno de nuestros estudiantes de fuera de la Unión Europea podría solicitar visa de estudiante. Ora para que pronto se nos conceda la licencia y para que todas las solicitudes por visas sean procesadas y aprobadas rápidamente.

“Un hombre turco se acercó a nuestra mesa de libros. Le ofrecí un Nuevo Testamento y ¡me dijo que ya lo había leído hasta la mitad! Se mostró muy entusiasmado cuando lo invité a la reunión en nuestra iglesia.” Comentó Jakob (Suiza)

Seguimos teniendo muy buenas conversaciones y distribuyendo literatura. Ora para que los corazones y vidas de aquellos con los que nos encontramos estén preparados para oír y leer Sus palabras y que le entreguen sus vidas a Él.

“Conocí a un hombre de Arabia Saudita. Me maravilló la apertura que tenía. Se llevó un Nuevo Testamento en árabe y otros libros.” Comentó Joe (EE.UU.)

Bangladesh: Líderes claves se reunieron en Junio para trabajar en un plan de desarrollo de programas por cinco años, luego lo remitirán al gobierno para su aprobación en Diciembre. Cerca de 200 estudiantes vienen cada día a los centros de entrenamiento vocacionales y de computación. Estos cursos duran por lo menos tres meses, lo que permite desarrollar relaciones cercanas entre los entrenadores y los participantes y de esta manera, tener buenas oportunidades para compartir acerca de Dios.

En Mayo, llegó un ciclón al sur del país, provocando la muerte a 180 personas y la devastación de cosechas y casas. Tristemente ya estamos trabajando más allá de nuestras capacidades y no tenemos equipos en el área afectada, así que no podemos involucrarnos directamente en la ayuda humanitaria. Nuestro corazón acompaña a los que han perdido todo. Por favor ora por los que están trabajando y viviendo en esa área; hay muchísima gente afectada y las necesidades son enormes.

Pakistán: En una aldea donde el equipo quiere instalar una bomba de agua y salas de lavado, el padre del creyente AS*, quien había sido muy negativo anteriormente, dijo: “He oído de ustedes. Luego de conocerlos hoy, estoy impresionado con la actitud de ustedes. Cuando sea que visiten este lugar, nuestras puertas estarán abiertas para ustedes y pueden quedarse a pasar la noche con nosotros.” En esta aldea donde viven 350 personas, el equipo quiere instalar diez bombas manuales y un baño para mujeres, con la expectativa de que la aldea vea el amor de Dios a través del servicio práctico.

El equipo femenino generalmente regresa a ciertas ciudades. Una dama contó una historia a otra mientras dibujaba con henna en su mano. Quien oyó la historia dijo: “Recordaré la historia mientras la henna dure en mi mano.” Y se preparó para contársela al equipo. Al mismo tiempo, los hombres del equipo hablaban con los esposos de las damas. Uno de ellos dijo: “Estoy interesado en reunir información acerca de la religión de ustedes. Me siento feliz de recibir un Injeel (Nuevo Testamento). Lo voy a estudiar.”

Europa

Bosnia: Por años, en la iglesia de Bihac ha habido mayoría de mujeres. Durante el último verano, Mujo* comenzó a seguir a Jesús y, desde entonces, ha crecido en el Señor. Algunos meses atrás, dos jóvenes llamados Mufid* y Dino* comenzaron a asistir a nuestras reuniones. Mufid está abierto hacia la fe bíblica, lee la Biblia regularmente, y se relaciona con parientes creyentes.

Cuando la mamá de Dino se convirtió en cristiana, comenzó a orar con denuedo por su familia. Dino tiene problemas con el alcohol, no tiene buenos amigos y le cuesta conseguir trabajo. La disposición de los creyentes en ayudarlos lo ha impactado. Estos tres hombres irán a un campamento juvenil de verano. Un ministerio efectivo de iglesias evangélicas. Ora para que cada participante reciba un toque personal de parte de Dios y que muchos lleguen a conocer a Jesús durante estos campamentos.

“Él realmente oye tus oraciones, este Dios es tuyo.”

Francia: Pierre* ha pasado gran parte de su vida trabajando con cantantes, compositores y actores franceses, pero ahora vive aislado y oprimido. Mark* le dijo que, antes de ayudarlo en forma práctica, había orado por él. Por semanas le contó que estaba orando por él, llevando ante Dios, cada dificultad que Pierre enfrentaba, incluyendo sus deudas, amenazas de desalojo, higiene personal y problemas de vista. Las respuestas a las oraciones fueron evidentes muy pronto: la visión en su ojo derecho mejoró y un centro de asistencia le entregó anteojos nuevos. Fue eximido de pagar impuestos y comenzó a esforzarse por mejorar su apariencia. Pierre respondió: “Él realmente oye tus oraciones, este Dios es tuyo.”

Austria: Quince cristianos de tres iglesias pasaron siete semanas memorizando el evangelio de Marcos. Sin escenario, vestuario ni utilería, tenían que actuar la vida de Jesús en una intensa obra que duró una hora y media y concluyó con las mujeres frente a la tumba vacía proclamando: “¡Ha resucitado! ¡Está vivo!”

“Fue maravilloso ver el efecto que el proceso tuvo en los actores”, dijo Renate. “Después de cada culto, este fue EL tema de conversación: Generalmente hay algo que alguien se da cuenta por primera vez y que tiene que ser compartido. En 30 horas el drama tenía que estar listo. Créeme, una cosa es leer el Evangelio, pero actuarlo produce un efecto en lo más profundo de nuestro ser.” Alrededor de 200 personas asistieron al show en un restaurante, y muchos fueron tocados al ver a Jesús con una luz nueva. Alaba a Dios por puertas abiertas en Gilgian y Renate Oester quien tuvo la iniciativa de compartir a Jesús en su comunidad. También por su creatividad para compartir con otros.

Montenegro: Hace ya casi dos años desde que el equipo de OM comenzó a trabajar en Bar, la principal ciudad portuaria, y se puede ver el progreso. La apertura oficial de un centro juvenil el 28 de Mayo fue la oportunidad para la asistencia de representantes de otras ONG, así como de vecinos y amigos que los miembros del equipo habían invitado. Los niños tienen su Club Bíblico los sábados, mientras que los adolescentes y adultos participan de las clases de inglés y alemán por las noches. Ora para que los miembros del equipo de OM alcancen a más personas en la comunidad, y que otros encuentren confort y paz en el lugar de reunión.

Eslovaquia: El Festival de Música Lumen organizado por la Iglesia Católica tuvo una convocatoria de 5000 jóvenes, 1000 de los cuales visitaron el Bus4Life. “Muchos de los cuales se fueron con uno o dos libros en sus manos (fue la venta de libros más alta del ministerio del ómnibus en Eslovaquia”, informó Ego Mayer, el conductor del Bus4Life. Gabriel* estaba buscando en la sección de los libros de inglés cuando Kristi* se le acercó. Estaba buscando una Biblia en inglés, pero estaba preocupado porque las Biblias no tenían una nota de aprobación del Papa en la tapa. Luego Kristi contó que “Gabriel no compró una Biblia pero dijo que quería a Cristo en su vida. Le di una copia del Nuevo Testamento con los Salmos en inglés. Más tarde regresó con un pequeño regalo de agradecimiento: un pin que decía: ‘Somos el perfume de Cristo’”.

Lifehope (RU): Atonya Sims comenzó un ministerio entre polacos en Birmingham hace como dos años atrás, lo hizo a pesar de que nunca estuvo en Polonia. “A algunos los ayudé a aprender inglés, a otros representando legalmente a sus hijos, y otros asuntos legales. Todo depende de lo que necesiten y de cómo puedo ayudarlos mejor.” Atonya tuvo la oportunidad de visitar Polonia brevemente el año pasado y ha decidido hacerlo otra vez este año, pero por tres meses para poder aprender más acerca de la cultura y el idioma, así como para servir a las iglesias locales en lo que sea posible.

Singapur: Una iglesia asociada a OM, que ya está apoyando a 300 niños en las escuelas Dalit en India, recibió la visita de Joseph D’Souza y con él un nuevo desafío. Joseph habló ante más de 200 jóvenes quienes escucharon atentamente mientras él les describía el trabajo que se realiza entre los Dalits, a la vez que los desafiaba a que oren para que esta generación de Dalits encuentre libertad de su opresión. Los 3000 miembros de la iglesia, que se reúnen en dos cultos los domingos por la mañana, escucharon con absoluto silencio mientras Joseph ilustraba la Oración del Señor y hablaba de la situación de los Dalits. La iglesia se está preparando para enviar un contenedor de 40 pies con ropa usada en buen estado para India.

OM organizó un te-cena para 60 pastores y líderes donde Joseph habló sobre el tema de Justicia, Derechos Humanos y la Misión del Reino. Ora por el seguimiento de la visita de Joseph, especialmente entre los líderes cristianos. Joseph es el orador del mayor evento de misiones en Australia: ReachOut, del 14-16 de Agosto. Ora para que muchos sean impactados. Joseph visitará varias ciudades luego de este evento. Ora por puertas abiertas en iglesias, escuelas, también con políticos y patrocinadores.

Ayuda y desarrollo

Asia Central: Suhrob*, un pequeño niño con parálisis cerebral, tenía un año de edad cuando su madre lo trajo al Programa de Intervención Temprana, del proyecto Todo lo Concerniente a los Niños. Por nueve meses los especialistas trabajaron en su desarrollo físico y habilidades motrices. Un día la madre llegó al proyecto con una brillante sonrisa, una bandeja con galletas y un corazón lleno de agradecimiento: ¡su hijo había comenzado a caminar! Él cantaba canciones aprendidas durante el programa y su familia estaba asombrada con su progreso. Alaba a Dios por los terapeutas que utilizaron sus conocimientos de esta manera para Dios.

Afganistán: El programa Técnicas de Parto para Salvar Vidas está cambiando vidas en las aldeas. Shy, una mujer sin educación formal, informó que “ya no damos a luz en lugares sucios. Tenemos cuidado de utilizar una sábana plástica, un cuchillo limpios, así como guantes de latex. Lavamos la boca y la nariz del bebé cuando nace, le aplicamos eritromicina en sus ojos y lo/la cubrimos para mantenerlo caliente. Ahora entendemos cuando la mamá o el bebé está en peligro y los llevamos rápidamente a la clínica más cercana, apenas aparece el problema, en vez de esperar hasta que sea demasiado tarde. Nuestros esposos no aceptaron esto primero, pero ahora escuchan y nos permiten ir a la clínica. Si el bebé no respira al nacer, sabemos darle golpecitos en los pies y piernas, le hablamos alto, le limpiamos su boca y nariz y soplamos despacito para estimular su respiración.”

Movimientos misioneros emergentes

Todo está hirviendo dentro mío Por primera vez iré a un país nuevo, sin mi familia, para compartir el evangelio. Estoy muy animado.

Asia Central: El Desafío de Verano del Camino de la Seda, realizado del 1 al 18 de Julio reunió 100 participantes de diferentes países de Asia Central que llevaron el evangelio a 20 destinos diferentes. Talgat* (18), conoció al Señor a los 4 años de edad, luego de ver la película Jesús con su madre. “Todo está hirviendo dentro mío”, dijo. “Por primera vez iré a un país nuevo, sin mi familia, para compartir el evangelio. Estoy muy animado.” Ora por frutos en sus vidas y a través de sus testimonios.

Perú: Pilar Castro, Líder de País de Guatemala informó: “Dios fue fiel en nuestro proyecto evangelístico realizado en Perú en Junio. Dos semanas antes, recibimos un equipo médico estadounidense que visitaron dos aldeas en Guatemala, así que no tuvimos tiempo para levantar fondos para el proyecto en Perú. ¡Aún así, nuestro Padre proveyó más de lo necesario! Veintiún guatemaltecos y salvadoreños trabajaron con cinco iglesias en diferentes lugares. Regresamos a Guatemala con una nueva visión.” El equipo alcanzó a 1000 hombres, mujeres y niños peruanos. Alrededor de 400 tomaron la decisión de recibir a Cristo. Cuando un grupo de hombres les pidió el balón de fútbol de colores, se lo prestaron, pero les dijeron que primero le explicarían los significados de los colores. Al final de la charla, desafiaron a los hombres a recibir a Jesús: ¡los 20 accedieron a hacerlo! También dieron entrenamiento a 125 líderes y miembros de iglesias en evangelismo creativo, liderazgo, y asuntos juveniles y matrimoniales.

China: La visión de OM es movilizar chinos para servir globalmente. Hay dos chinos sirviendo en el Doulos, y dos más se unirán al Logos Hope en Agosto. La familia de Hope estuvo involucrada activamente en el trabajo de desarrollo de OM en la provincia de Sichuan, ayudando a reconstruir escuelas luego del devastador terremoto en Mayo de 2008. Su padre ha conectado a OM con muchos otros hombres de negocios y líderes cristianos. Ora por Hope y su primo mientras solicitan visas. Ninguno de ellos ha estado fuera de China antes.

Costa Rica: “Gracias por venir. Ustedes nos traen un maravilloso alivio a nuestra realidad”, dijo Candy, una joven madre que asiste al programa femenino de OM en Las Tablas, una comunidad que sufre de pobreza, drogas, alcoholismo, trabajo sexual y violencia doméstica contra mujeres y niños. Las mujeres de OM se reúnen cada dos semanas con un grupo de 15 a 25 mujeres, la mayoría madres jóvenes, en el centro comunitario de la iglesia local. El tiempo compartido con la Palabra de Dios hace una diferencia en sus vidas al recibir verdades aplicables a su realidad. Ora para que la presencia de Dios transforme más vidas.

Pensemos otra vez: Misiones en un mundo desordenado

Ha habido caos fuera de nuestra oficina por un año: las calles han sido destruidas y el tráfico desviado. Nos han dicho que para el 12/12/2010, las calles renovadas, una estación de trenes extendida, y un nuevo tranvía ‘12’ con recorrido al aeropuerto, harán que valga la pena los meses de inconvenientes que hemos tenido que soportar.

Esto no sucedió de un día para otro. Hace varios años, alguien tuvo la visión de un mejor sistema de transporte para el área. Y la única manera de lograrlo es a través de un período de caos controlado.

Para ser justo, ni la palabra control ni caos describen correctamente la situación. Los carteles indicadores de desvíos y de lugares de estacionamientos van cambiando según el plan original. ¡Aunque todo esto no cambia el desorden allí afuera!

Respondiendo al desorden

¿Cómo respondo? Podría ignorar los cambios, manejar por donde estaba acostumbrado, y caminar por donde había vereda. Si logro llegar a la oficina, no estaría en usa sola pieza, y quizás tendría una multa de tránsito. Podría caminar entre el desorden, enfocarme en los inconvenientes, gritar enojado a los obreros, y preguntar a quien quiera oír: “¡¿Qué cosa tan importante están haciendo?!” Llegaría a la oficina, quizás algunos me acompañen, pero no ganaría amigos entre los obreros.

Una mejor opción es recordar que estas son mejoras para el futuro; imaginar la nueva línea férrea en vez de las demoras de tránsito y el barro en mis zapatos hoy. Esta actitud me hace caminar más placenteramente y puede, aun, ayudar a otros a enfocarse en el futuro brillante, en vez de enfocarse en las molestias presentes.

Misiones en un mundo desordenado

Esto ilustra un importante principio: la manera en que vemos el futuro tiene un gran impacto en cómo emprendemos misiones. El mundo se parece a la zona en construcción que rodea la oficina de OM Suiza. Una forma de entrar en misiones es ignorar la realidad de los cambios. Si emprendo misiones como si estuviéramos en la época Victoriana o como si la crisis económica 2008/09 nunca hubiera ocurrido; si ignoro el increíble crecimiento de la iglesia global o cualquiera de otras docenas de factores, mi andar será lento y, tarde o temprano, me chocaré con la realidad.

Otra forma es quejarse a gritos: “¡Mira lo que ellos [escoge quienes] están haciendo para arruinar las cosas!” Concedido: el pecado y los pecadores están desordenando el mundo. Pero, al igual que tocar mi bocina y gritar a los obreros de la construcción afuera de mi oficina, mi actitud no cambiará sus vidas ni ordenará el mundo. Una reacción de enojo y desconectada con el mundo tiene pocas oportunidades de traer cambios significativos y duraderos en las vidas individuales o en la sociedad toda.

Por el contrario, puedo reconocer que Dios obra soberanamente de acuerdo con su propósito, involucrando a personas como tú y yo: los obreros llamados a la cosecha (Mateo 9:38). Para nuestro asombro, aún Faraón y los militantes babilónicos ayudaron a proclamar su Nombre y Gloria en toda la tierra (Éxodo 9:16; Habacuc 1:6; 2:14).

Esta visión del futuro me permite cooperar mejor con Dios mientras trabaja en este mundo caótico de hoy, utilizando aún a los tiranos que más desprecio. Y, sin concederle un centímetro a la opresión ni buscando tratar a la profecía bíblica como una edición anticipada del periódico de mañana, me enfoco en la esperanza eterna de Dios, transformadora de vida, basada en la resurrección, mientras camino en el desorden de construcción de mi vida.

Este es el mundo de mi Padre. Oh que nunca lo olvide.

Aun cuando lo malo parece a menudo muy fuerte,

Todavía Dios está en control.

Este es el mundo de mi Padre: la batalla no terminó:

Jesús, Quien murió será satisfecho,

Y tierra y Cielo serán uno.
