Making a clean start

OM International
English/Español/Français

Ten year-old Lejla* was so excited because her OM friends were coming to the Roma camp, and they were bringing more new friends for them to meet—a group of young guys from Germany, who would build a good place for them to wash.

Lejla’s mother used to wash her pots and pans and clothes from one old hosepipe shared by all of the Roma mothers; only rarely did Lejla and her brothers and sisters wash themselves. The Germans came back every day, first to lay foundations for the washing unit, then to work with bricks and taps and washbasins. And they were always happy to have Lejla and the other kids hang around. There was time also for Bible stories, games and crafts. After it was finished, Lejla’s mother did the washing and Lejla was proud when it was all hung up to dry, shining white. She was even prouder that she was able to wash herself!
