Base camp for global expeditions

“Our daughter Sandra received a checklist, amongst other things, from the OM office in Wallisellen to help her prepare for her two year commitment on the Doulos,” said Thomas. “This was further proof that the programme had been well thought through, and that our daugther would be in good hands with OM.”

Today, Thomas works at the OM office in Switzerland. Restructuring in his previous company gave him sufficient incentive to think about changing job. He thought, “Why not use my gifts in a Christian organisation?” A newspaper advertisement pointed him to a vacancy in OM Switzerland. Thomas said, “I was invited to work alongside others on the first day, giving me a greater understanding of the work of OM. Diversified contact with people interested me. After a time of reflection and prayer, I gladly accepted the position, and my wife agreed to the change despite the loss of friends and community involvement at home.”

Employment at the OM office meant not only changing residential location for Thomas and Regula, but also the development of a support group willing to provide them financial and prayer support. “We knew that the change would not be instant, but did not want anything to hinder our decision to work with OM. A further challenge proved to be managing life with much less income,” said Thomas. “I was employed in my previous company for over 21 years, and worked in Management Accounting and Controlling. Regula and I had then moved to another canton to help develop a new Christian fellowship. For many years we invested into this project financially. It sure is a strange feeling to be suddenly standing on the receiving end – now that we are dependant on donations ourselves.”

Since April 2008, Thomas has worked as accountant for OM Switzerland. “Thomas has really started to blossom in his role at OM Switzerland,” reports Regula. “The stories from OM workers help me know what God is doing throughout the world,” adds Thomas. “It is a real joy for me to be part of it. My main function is to ensure that donations flow from Switzerland to over 110 countries via an international OM financial system. As a result, workers on the field are able to continue their work without interruption. I also enjoy supporting them in prayer.”

Thomas compares his responsibilities in the home office as to those of a base camp for expeditions: Preparations are made at base camp, and the support provided by the base camp during the expedition is vital for the survival of the people on trek!

BASISLAGER FOR WELTWEITE EXPEDITIONEN

“Unsere Tochter Sandra hatte vom OM Büro in Wallisellen unter anderem Checklisten zur Vorbereitung ihres 2-jährigen Einsatzes auf der Doulos erhalten,” erzählt Thomas. "Dies war für uns ein weiteres Indiz, dass die Sache durchdacht war und wir unsere Tochter bei OM in guten Händen wissen durften."

Heute arbeitet Thomas selber im OM Büro. Restrukturierungen bei seinem vorherigen Arbeitgeber hatten ihn veranlasst, sich einen Stellenwechsel zu überlegen. Er dachte, "Weshalb eigentlich nicht meine Gaben in einem christlichen Werk einsetzen?"Durch ein Inserat in einer Zeitschrift wurde ich auf eine vakante Stelle bei OM Schweiz aufmerksam. Thomas erzählt, "Ein Schnuppertag gab mir tieferen Einblick ins Arbeitsgebiet bei OM. Der vermehrte Kontakt mit Menschen sprach mich an. Nach einer Bedenkzeit und dem Prüfen im Gebet sagte ich freudig zu und auch meine Frau Regula fand ein Ja zu diesem Schritt, denn sie musste ja auch viele Kolleginnen und Aufgaben an unserem damaligen Wohnort zurücklassen."

Die Mitarbeit im OM Büro bedeutete für Thomas und Regula neben Wohnortswechsel auch, einen Freundeskreis aufzubauen, der sie im Gebet und finanziell unterstützt. Thomas, "Uns war klar, dass dies nicht von einem Tag auf den andern möglich sein würde. Wir wollten uns davon aber nicht hindern lassen, den Schritt zu OM zu wagen. Eine weitere Herausforderung würde sein, mit dem viel kleineren Lohn auszukommen. Gut 21 Jahre hatte ich bei meinem bisherigen Arbeitgeber in der Betriebsbuchhaltung und im Controlling gearbeitet. Regula und ich waren damals in die Innerschweiz gezogen, um uns dort in einem Gemeindebauprojekt zu engagieren. Viele Jahre haben wir diese Arbeit auch finanziell unterstützt. Es ist schon speziell, nun plötzlich auf der anderen Seite zu stehen --jetzt sind wir auf Spenden angewiesen."

Seit April 2008 arbeitet Thomas als Buchhalter im OM Büro. "Thomas ist in seiner Aufgabe bei OM richtig aufgeblüht!" erzählt Regula. Thomas, "Durch die Berichte von OM Mitarbeitenden erhalte ich Einblick in Gottes Wirken in der ganzen Welt. Es bereitet mir viel Freude, daran beteiligt zu sein. Durch meine Arbeit fliessen die Spenden aus der Schweiz via internationales OM Finanzsystem an über 110 Einsatzländer. So können sich die Mitarbeitenden vor Ort ganz auf ihre Aufgaben konzentrieren. Ich unterstütze sie auch gerne im Gebet."

Thomas vergleicht die Aufgabe eines Heimatbüros mit dem Basislager einer Expedition: Im Basislager wird vorbereitet und während der Expedition ist das Basislager ein lebenswichtiger Rückhalt für die Leute draussen!
