Act Justly, love Mercy, walk humbly...
What God Wants
“He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” (Micah 6:8)
To Act Justly?
The number of Indonesian domestic helpers in Hong Kong is constantly increasing. Besides the fact that majority of them can understand Cantonese, it could also be because of the fact that some employers only pay approximately HK$ 2,000 as their monthly wages! Many agencies, in their bid to win more customers, illegally exploit the wages that the helpers deserve and even require them to agree to some unreasonable arrangements. There are even some Christians amongst these unprincipled and unjust employers! Not only are their actions illegal, they bring the name of our God to shame.
To Love Mercy!
The impression many people have of Indonesian domestic helpers is one that is relatively submissive and teachable, but slower in learning and doing tasks. Hong Kong people require efficiency in all things; so they misunderstand the helpers as “stupid” or “lazy”. However, I also know some Christian employers who are willing to be patient and gracious toward their helpers. In the end, not only do they find a good helper for their families (as opposed to an enemy) but also gain a sister for God’s House!
To Walk Humbly with God
God has blessed Hong Kongs’ economy which has enabled us to hire domestic helpers. Currently, there are 130,000 Indonesian domestic helpers in Hong Kong, with 80% or above being Muslim. Are we willing to walk humbly with God to fulfill the Great Commission?
