Dear partners in prayer,

Greetings again in the name of our Lord Jesus. Many of you were praying for our International Leaders Meetings in Thailand, followed by our first-ever representative International General Council. Without doubt, your prayers were wonderfully answered. We sensed the presence of God, heard His voice speaking through His word and heard of His power as we received reports of God at work around the world. It was a thrilling time, a privilege for me to be part of it, and I want to thank you most sincerely for your prayers.

These meetings are a time of envisioning as we hear reports of what God is doing around the world and as various speakers give input on significant mission issues of the moment. Please pray that, as leaders of our ministry return to their locations, they might know what has been of real significance for them in these meetings and what they should be implementing in their local situations. Once again, our sincere thanks for your prayers.

Ownership of the Doulos was officially transferred on 18 March to Christian businessman Eric Saw, Director and Chief Executive of BizNaz Resources International Pte Ltd in Singapore. After renovations, it is planned to have the ship accessible to the public, but from a fixed berth. “Subject to approval by authorities, we would like to have themed restaurants and cafés, a bookshop and a banquet room for seminars, conferences and weddings,” said Mr. Saw. “We also plan to have a maritime museum with conducted tours. From a Christian perspective, we hope to eventually host a small Bible School for lay persons. Our plans are to rename her Doulos Phos where she will be both a servant and a light.”

Lake Tanganyika: On 21 February, a flash flood swept through Tongwa, where three OM workers live, damaging the clinic and school, and collapsing several homes. Thankfully, no one was killed. Many lost everything. The now muddy stream is the only source of water. People in Tongwa are afraid to sleep inside for fear of collapse. The school is closed, and fishermen are afraid to fish, suspecting witchcraft. Government aid has yet to materialize. Please pray for peace among the villages and for wisdom for those in leadership-making decisions. Pray for opportunities to share the Gospel with those in need and for strength and protection for those helping. Finances toward rebuilding efforts can be sent to OM Lake Tanganyika (Fund number 88300).

Chile: OM team members are in Pichilemu to help people recover from the March earthquakes. OM Field Leader Carlos Correa travelled to Talcahuano, a southern port city that was hit by the earthquake and following tsunami. He and Yerko Clavero brought food and water and visited pastors and churches to organise relief work. Several organisations are mobilising people to bring food, clothing and shelter to Chileans in need. OM wants to focus more on rebuilding, channeling resources through local churches for greatest impact in their communities. We plan to send work teams to the south in June and July.

Haiti: In early March, OM Netherlands sent a structural engineer who inspected orphanages, churches and houses, while his psychologist wife met with hundreds of adults and children, helping them process the earthquake and the pain of their loss.

An eight-member medical team sent from OM Uruguay arrived later to serve a volunteer medical clinic, visit orphanages and hold clinics for children. Our team continues to deliver food to various locations. OM USA staff are collecting food, hygiene and shelter items to fill a shipping container. OM Caribbean is grateful for funds they continue to receive from various OM offices around the world.

Bangladesh: We have submitted our next five-year plan to the government for approval and need approval by 1 July; with much officialdom to work through, this needs prayer. Although finances cannot match the requests for help, the Schools Assistance programme should still be able to install ten toilets, ten tube wells, ten libraries and ten classroom furniture sets in needy schools. It is great to be able to make a difference, but more funds would empower us to help the many schools we now have to turn away.

In Pakistan, the men’s teams have been befriending brick kiln workers, for whom last month they held a medical camp. A team of specialised physicians saw many people, including national faith believers, coming from nearby villages for checkups. Team members chatted with those waiting, and shared God’s love. Three-hundred and fifty people received free medicine, medical advice and many also accepted literature to read.

Belgium: The Transit Challenge team arrived in mid-February, and spent their first week working in a refugee centre with Serve the City (Brussels), providing meals for the homeless with Schaarbeek Church and helping out at Kid’s Club in Zaventem. Later they helped a new fellowship in Tienen through prayer walks, drama and distributing ‘love letters from God’ at the local market. They also presented Transform2010 to young adults.

In partnership with the Église Protestante Évangélique de Wavre, the team will spend another week doing street ministry in a local market and in a student town to gain insight into these communities. Pray for wisdom and strength for organisers, and for deepened partnerships.

Croatia: Ivan stood quietly in a corner, watching others eating their only warm, nutritious meal of the month. He wrote his name on the window with his finger to express,“I am somebody. I have a name: Ivan.” Ivan is Bayash, the ‘least of the least’, former slaves even among other Roma. He has lived in this ghetto for all of his 12 years, one of 7 children whose father is mentally handicapped; both parents are alcoholics. One of two teenage believers in his village, for a year Ivan has known: I am somebody! ‘Bobby’ told him that—and he is trustworthy, because he keeps coming back to show God’s love for him and the others.

Bob and Nancy Hitching (Roma Bible Union) visit Ivan’s village every month and built little one-room houses there. They do a club programme with the kids: singing, telling stories about God, praying and teaching how to read their own language, Bayash—even creating the script for their heart language. Bob keeps drunken and upset adults outside and mediates in fights between the kids, establishing a peaceful atmosphere as they sit on the muddy floor covered with plastic or on the laps of two other helpers. For a few hours they colour books they received from Nancy, books that carry their names. Pray for strength, courage and encouragement for workers among the Roma communities of Croatia. muslim peoples

Middle East: Kawan* was a diligent student of the Koran and the Hadith. When a Kurdish friend shared the gospel, he started to study the Bible. Confused, he did not want to read either book any longer. One night, he prayed: “Oh God, what is the right way?” and heard a voice calling, “I am Jesus, the one you are seeking. I want to give you a new heart, but first you must die.” Kawan felt a strange sensation, afraid as he slowly lost feeling in his body. He awoke his wife and told her that he must die, but assured her that the Lord is with him. After a while, he revived and felt like a new man. His wife was troubled and told her relatives, who insisted that he see a psychiatrist. Through reading God’s Word, Jesus told Kawan to trust in him.

Please pray for OM’s ministry to the Kurds to whom God is revealing himself in special ways. Pray for the new believers to be discipled, overcome fear from persecution, for fellowships to grow and for more local workers.

Pakistan: The women’s ministry team recently worked in a village where very strong national faith believers opposed local Christians, so they focused on helping villagers grow in their relationship with Jesus and deal with the emotions of conflicting faiths. At the last meeting, 27 out of 63 gave their lives to Jesus; pray they will grow in faith and become salt and light. The team also held Sunday school in the village, where 75 children took part, learning action songs and Noah’s story. A local girl was commissioned as Sunday school teacher to continue teaching in place of the team.

Turning Point (UK): During Call Of Hope Easter Outreach, 27 March-10 April, short-term participants join us for training and going out on the streets to share God’s love. For some, it will be their first experience in sharing their faith. Pray they would anticipate God’s working in and through their lives, and that some would catch a vision for long-term ministry. Many people are more interested in church and personal faith at Easter, which leads to opportunities to share the love of God.

With more than 300 spoken languages in London, having the correct portion of Gospel literature to give to someone is vital. English is the ‘trade language’ but God often speaks to people most convincingly with their ‘heart language’. This is why we have a wide variety of literature: 199 languages in stock, including Arabic, English, Turkish, Persian and even Zarma, spoken in Niger. In 2009 we distributed 109,343 items through our ministry and partnerships with other churches and missions.

A key resource is 30,000 new Jesus film DVDs; two editions with sixteen languages (English on both). These will have a huge impact upon so many more people who are living or visiting here. What an opportunity to talk to people with 31 languages in our pocket! Pray that God would stir people to seek Jesus and that we would have literature in their ‘heart language’. Please pray that God would continue to provide finances to make this possible.

Turkey: For three years, Thomas and Anna have lived in a building which has 'This is God’s House' in Arabic engraved in the stonework. It isn’t easy living on the fourth floor—90 steps with 2 small children—but they persevere, praying for their neighbours. Anna has had opportunities to share the Scriptures and pray for several women, their friends and relatives.

An old couple, however, had never greeted them, visited or welcomed them into their home. One day, their two-year-old son approached the old man and kissed his hand, the traditional greeting showing respect for the elderly. This simple act changed everything: the old man was overwhelmed with emotion and, with tears in his eyes, announced to Thomas and Anna, “You must all come in now and drink tea with us.”

As they sat together, he began to open up his life to them. During the annual Muslim festival, he had sacrificed a cow, which in its death throes, had kicked him in the face, causing him to lose teeth and spend two days in hospital. This had made him think, “Should my sacrifice to God kick me in the teeth?” This old man has read the Bible and has many questions for Thomas and Anna. They now have a growing friendship—all because of a child’s innocent act of honouring his elders. Pray for ‘God’s house’ in this conservative Turkish town and for more breakthroughs with their neighbours.

Central Asia: When God sent Jeremiah into the potter’s house, he knew that several thousand years later He’d be working in the heart of a Central Asian man through a children’s ‘clay-mation’. Miracle Maker was translated last year into a Central Asian language and is having an immediate impact. Will* gave a copy to his local friend, Bahodir* who couldn’t get enough of it. Last week, having watched the film more than five times, he visited Will, bursting with questions. After several hours buried in the Word together, Will led Bahodir in committing himself to Christ. Pray that Bahodir will be the first of many Central Asians moved by Miracle Maker into surrendering their lives to the Potter’s hand.

The main focus of a parenting course was Healthy Love. Here are some quotes after the second session:
• “As a mother of two kids, I’ve never kissed or hugged them. After the training, I came home, kissed my 7-year-old son and gave him a hug, telling him that I love him very much. My boy looked at me, shocked, trying to hide the tears running down his cheeks. I cried with my son and together we sat there for awhile, trying to catch up with each other.”
• “My fourth girl, 5-year-old Nasiba, is the most mischievous of my six daughters. I get frustrated by her behaviour. After the training, I came home and called her. Looking straight into her eyes, I told her that I love her very much. She froze! ’Mummy, that’s not true! You love Asal, you love Noushin, you love Nargis, you love Mitra and Gulshan. You love them, but not me!’ Again, I told her how much I love her; she cried and asked me to repeat it over and over again. Since that day, there has been a change in her behaviour. I am still shocked by how much LOVE can do.”

Pray that the 15 participants will put into practice what they have learned and return for two more sessions. Pray for more great testimonies of God’s healing, releasing love at work.

emerging mission movements

Bangladesh: Recently 20 ‘more mature’ believers gathered for an evening of teaching. We were encouraged to hear them repeat the story of Moses back to the teacher, and we look forward to seeing their maturing faith affecting communities and families. One brother travelled to another country to learn more about what God is doing through OM. As our first team member to spend time working in another country, he is fully stretched helping in the orphanage and schools work but is also reaching out to Bangladeshis living there.

Mexico: OM staff spend Fridays in ministry in Mexico City, reaching out to whomever God brings in their path. One team member took an X-Box (video game console) to a park, which drew many children and teens to play games and hear about Jesus. Unfortunately, the X-Box also drew the attention of a man wielding a gun, who demanded that the OMers give him the X-Box.
A week later, the man returned to the park to find the OM staff, still playing games with the children but minus X-Box. The man apologized for taking the X-Box and said he too wanted to hear about Jesus. Within a few meetings, this former gang member had given his life to Christ! He then brought other associates with him to meet the OM staff, so that they also could hear about Jesus.

Praise the Lord for these transformed lives in Mexico City! Pray for our team to be able to raise the money to replace the X-Box; and pray for them as they continue to minister on Fridays in Mexico City.

Pakistan: Twenty-five girls participated in the Women’s Bible Training Camp from 16–27 February, while 40 men attended the Men’s Camp from 2–13 March. The Great Commission Conference held in February in partnership with another respected organisation saw 86 pastors and leaders learning the characteristics of a healthy church, church planting and ways to enthuse church members to finish the Great Commission. A pastor shared, “I have learned through this conference how to renew my passion. I recognise that without passion a church cannot grow.”

Before a youth meeting, the men’s team visited different homes and streets with literature. A large group of young men gathered at the meeting place, so the team challenged them to reach out in their respective areas and not be dissuaded under any circumstances. Their enthusiasm was inspiring!

pioneering initiatives

Nepal: Eight people in two groups (men's and women’s) have gone to the far west and north for two months, bringing Jesus’ love to remote villages. A team member reports, “Our group returned to a mountainous, remote, strongly Buddhist area near the Tibetan border together with a Tibetan pastor. We shared God’s love with more than a hundred people, distributed clothes and showed movies about Jesus. Some have become believers, so we are preparing to go back to help them go on with God.”

OM also promotes awareness to the local church communities about human rights, basic health care, HIV/AIDS, human trafficking, the danger of drugs, and agricultural training. We need the right trainers for all these. We support 12 children through AIDSlink Nepal by providing school fees and health care, and otherwise help 18 different families every month.

Think again: Seeing clearly, speaking humbly

I read a book this afternoon in a way I have not done since Christmas: with both eyes. During the recovery process from quite unexpected eye surgery at the end of 2009, for the past 13 weeks the best I have been able to say about my right eye has been, like the man of Bethsaida, “I see men as trees, walking” (Mark 8:24). Putting on my new glasses this morning was like Jesus’ second, vision-clearing touch.

This experience has caused me to think a lot about eyes. Some of it has been humorous. Shortly after surgery I asked my wife to read the Bible to me. Turning to Matthew 18 where she had left off in her own devotions, she started “And if your right eye causes you to sin…” We laughed, and she quickly chose another passage!

Much of my reflection has been more serious. A quick scan of a Bible concordance points to numerous verses highlighting vision, and the darkness of physical and spiritual blindness. Ironically, it was sightless Bartimaeus, not the “seeing” crowds, who perceived that Jesus was the Son of David and called out to him in faith (Mark 10:47).

Distance vision and close-up detail

Yesterday, as I read an article about a significant mission-related issue, I found myself wondering about impaired vision of another kind. In that printed exchange of missiological views, the writers’ strength of opinion and certainty of being correct seemed to get stronger and stronger the farther away they lived from the setting considered.

There is great value to be gained from the perspective of distance—the old “can’t see the forest for the trees” syndrome. To his team’s advantage, a football coach sitting high up in the stadium can pick up patterns and movement that the players on the field (and coaches on the sideline) cannot see. Seated far from the action, though, the distant observer misses details of individual performance and one-on-one match-ups, as well as the tripping, shoving, and hidden fouls that contribute to victory or defeat. A game plan concocted in the press box will fail unless it matches with the skills and struggles, strengths and injuries, and the “look at the ball” of each player on the field.

Perfect eyesight or sufficient clarity?

Recently I read Chris Wright’s The God I Don’t Understand (Zondervan 2008). While affirming his faith in and love for God and confidence in the Bible, Wright skillfully walks us through a series of questions related to themes of evil, the Cross, and eschatology. The Bible, Wright reminds us, does not offer a definitive, final answer to every question we might ask—a fact that strengthens my faith, not shakes it.

I wish there was a sequel to Wright’s book with a title something like Things about God and Mission I Don’t Understand. I am not sure that I am risk-taking enough to write such a book, but I know the attitude I would like to permeate it. Paul Hiebert described an approach to knowledge he called critical realism: on this earth we can know with assurance, but our knowledge is more like a map than a photograph. Or, as he often paraphrased 1 Corinthians 13:12, “We see in a glass, darkly…but we do see.”

A fuller picture

As you can imagine, I am delighted to be able to see clearly again, with both eyes. Yes, I can function with one eye. But with the proper lenses I can read more quickly, drive more safely, and enjoy the beauty of creation more fully. And yet it takes only a simple act to remind me of my weakness. For, despite the clarity with which I can see the words I am typing, all it takes is for me to slip off my new glasses (or to use my distance glasses instead of my reading lenses) to realize how limited I am.

None of us can stand alone; we need each other and the perspective and insights of those who see from different vantage points. There are many things we should affirm with sound assurance, whether from close range or far away. Our missiological pronouncements, though, should be seasoned by humility, and especially when we write and speak from afar.

Saludos otra vez, en el nombre de nuestro Señor Jesús. Muchos de ustedes oraron por nuestras Reuniones de Líderes Internacionales en Tailandia, y por el primer Concilio General Internacional de representantes. Sin dudas, tus oraciones fueron respondidas maravillosamente. Sentimos la presencia de Dios, oímos Su voz hablando a través de Su palabra y oímos de Su poder cuando repasamos los informes de la obra de Dios alrededor del mundo. Fue un tiempo emocionante, un privilegio para mí ser parte de esto, y quiero agradecerte sinceramente por tus oraciones.

Estas reuniones son un tiempo para transmitir visión, al oír informes de lo que Dios está haciendo alrededor del mundo y cuando los oradores dan sus opiniones sobre asuntos importantes de las misiones actuales. Por favor ora para que cuando los líderes de nuestro ministerio regresen a sus lugares puedan darse cuenta lo que significan los temas tratados en estas reuniones y sepan cómo aplicar todo esto en las situaciones de cada uno. La titularidad del barco Doulos fue transferida oficialmente el 18 de Marzo a un hombre cristiano de negocios, llamado Eric Saw, Director y Presidente Ejecutivo de BizNaz Resources International Pte Ltd en Singapur. Luego de una renovación, se planea que el barco esté abierto al público desde un muelle fijo. “Sujeto a la aprobación de las autoridades, nos gustaría tener restaurantes temáticos y cafés; una librería y una sala de cena para albergar seminarios, conferencias y casamientos.”, comentó el Sr. Saw. “También planeamos tener un museo marítimo con visitas guiadas. Desde una perspectiva cristiana, esperamos ser anfitriones de un pequeño Instituto Bíblico para laicos. Planeamos cambiar su nombre a Doulos Phos puesto que seguirá siendo un siervo y una luz.”

Lago Tanganyika: el 21 de Febrero, una inundación repentina barrió Tongwa, donde viven tres obreros de OM. Esto provocó daños en la clínica y la escuela, y destruyó varias casas. Estamos agradecidos porque no hubo víctimas fatales. Muchos han perdido todo. La única fuente de agua es un arrollo que ahora está lleno de barro. Los habitantes de Tongwa temen dormir dentro de sus casas por temor a que se derrumben. La escuela está cerrada y los pescadores temen ir a pescar, porque sospechan que hay trabajos de brujería. La ayuda gubernamental todavía no se ha efectivizado. Por favor ora por paz en las aldeas y por sabiduría para quienes están en el liderazgo tomando decisiones. Ora por oportunidades para compartir el evangelio con aquellos en necesidad y por fortaleza y protección para quienes ayudan. Fondos para los esfuerzos de reconstrucción pueden enviarse a OM Lake Tanganyika a través de la oficina de OM en tu país.

Chile: Miembros del equipo de OM están en Pichilemu para ayudar a las personas a recuperarse del terremoto de Marzo. El líder de OM, Carlos Correa, viajó a Talcahuano, una ciudad portuaria al sur de Santiago, que fue golpeada por el terremoto y el tsunami que lo siguió. Él y Yerko Clavero llevaron comida y agua, también visitaron pastores e iglesias para organizar el trabajo de ayuda. Haití: A principios de Marzo, OM Países Bajos envió un ingeniero estructural que inspeccionó edificios de orfanatos, iglesias y casas particulares. A su vez su esposa, que es psicóloga, atendió a cientos de niños y adultos, ayudándoles en el proceso del dolor por las pérdidas a causa del terremoto. Más tarde, llegó un equipo médico enviado por OM Uruguay, para servir en una clínica médica, visitar orfanatos y atención médica a niños. Nuestro equipo sigue llevando alimentos a diferentes lugares. El personal de OM EE.UU. está recogiendo alimentos y otros ítems de higiene para llenar un contenedor. OM Caribe están agradecidos por fondos que siguen recibiendo desde varias oficinas de OM alrededor del mundo.

Bangladesh: Hemos enviado al gobierno nuestro plan para los próximos cinco años. Necesitamos que sea aprobado para el 1 de Julio, debido a todos los trámites que se necesitan hacer, son bienvenidas las oraciones. Aunque las finanzas no pueden ayudar con los requerimientos del gobierno, el programa de Asistencia Escolar todavía necesita instalar diez baños, diez pozos entubados, diez bibliotecas y diez conjuntos de muebles para salones de clase en una escuela en necesidad. Es grandioso poder hacer una diferencia y un mayor ingreso de fondos nos dará los medios para ayudar a más escuelas que ahora hemos tenido que decidir no ayudar.

En Pakistán, el equipo de varones ha entablado amistad con obreros de un horno de ladrillos, para los cuales el mes pasado se instaló un campamento médico. Un equipo de médicos especialistas atendió a muchas personas incluyendo a creyentes nacionales. Los pacientes venían de aldeas cercanas para ser atendidos. Los miembros del equipo conversaron con quienes esperaban ser atendidos y compartieron con ellos el amor de Dios. 350 personas recibieron gratuitamente medicamentos y consejos médicos. Muchos también aceptaron literatura para leer.

Bélgica: El equipo de Desafío de Tránsito llegó a mediados de Febrero, y pasó la primera semana trabajando en un centro de refugiados con Servet he City (Bruselas), proveyendo comida a los sin hogar junto a la Iglesia Schaarbeek y también ayudaron en el Club de Niños en Zaventem. Más tarde ayudaron a una obra nueva en Tienen, donde realizaron caminatas de oración, dramas y distribución de “love letters from God” (cartas de amor de parte de Dios) en el mercado. También presentaron el programa Transform 2010 a jóvenes adultos.

En asociación con la Église Protestante Évangélique de Wavre, el equipo pasará otra semana haciendo ministerio en las calles, en el mercado local y en un pueblo de estudiantes para lograr confianza dentro de la comunidad. Ora por sabiduría y fortaleza para los organizadores y por un trabajo en conjunto más profundo.

Croacia: Ivan estaba callado en un rincón, mirando a los demás comiendo su única comida caliente y nutricional del mes. Escribió su nombre en la ventana con su dedo para expresar: “Soy alguien. Tengo un nombre, Ivan.” Él es un bayash, considerados ‘menos que nada’, antiguamente eran esclavos aún entre otros grupos roma (gitanos). Ha vivido en ese ghetto los 12 años que tiene de vida, es uno de 8 hermanos cuyo padre es discapacitado mental, ambos padres son alcohólicos. Ahora es uno de los dos adolescentes creyentes en su aldea, ya hace un año que Ivan sabe que “¡es alguien!” ‘Bobby’ se lo dijo, y tiene confianza en él porque continúa regresando para mostrarle el amor de Dios a él y a otros.

Bob y Nancy Hitching (Unión Bíblica Roma) visitan la aldea de Iván cada mes y construyen una pequeña casa de una sola habitación. Hacen un programa para niños donde cantan, cuentan historias acerca de Dios, oran y enseñan a leer en su propio idioma, el bayash, aún han creado las letras para el idioma de su corazón.

Bob mantiene a los borrachos y los malhumorados afuera y media en las peleas entre los niños, a fin de establecer una atmósfera de paz cuando se sientan en el piso polvoriento cubierto con plástico, aunque algunos se sientan en la falda de otras dos personas que ayudan. Por algunas horas colorean los libros que recibieron de Nancy, libros que tienen sus nombres. Ora por fortaleza, ánimo y valentía para los obreros entre las comunidades roma en Croacia. Medio Oriente: Kawan* fue un estudiante diligente del Corán y la Hadith. Cuando un amigo kurdo le compartió el evangelio, él comenzó a estudiar la Biblia. Confundido, no quiso leer más ninguno de los libros. Una noche él oró: “Oh Dios, ¿cuál es el camino correcto?” y oyó una voz que decía: “yo soy Jesús, a quien estás buscando. Quiero darte un nuevo corazón, pero primero tienes que morir.” Kaman sintió una extraña sensación. Se asustó cuando dejó de sentir su cuerpo. Despertó a su esposa y le dijo que él debía morir, pero le aseguró a ella que el Señor estaba con él. Luego de un rato, revivió y se sintió un nuevo hombre. Su esposa se turbó y le contó a sus parientes, quienes insistieron para que vea a un médico. Leyendo la Palabra de Dios, Jesús le dijo a Kawan que confíe en Él. Por favor ora por el ministerio de OM entre los kurdos a quienes Dios se le revela en maneras especiales. Ora por los nuevos creyentes para que sean discipulados, venzan el temor de la persecución, para que los pequeños grupos crezcan y por más obreros locales.

Pakistán: El equipo de mujeres recientemente trabajó en una aldea donde los creyentes en la fe nacional son muy fuertes y se oponen a los cristianos locales. Así que ellas se enfocaron en ayudar a los aldeanos a crecer en su relación con Jesús y tratar con las emociones que causan conflictos en su fe. En la última reunión, 27 de los 63 asistentes, dieron sus vidas a Jesús. Ora para que crezcan en fe y sean sal y luz.

El equipo también llevó a cabo una escuela dominical en la aldea, donde asistieron 75 niños que aprendieron canciones y la historia de Noe. Una señorita local fue comisionada como maestra de la escuela dominical para continuar enseñando allí.

Punto de Cambio (RU): Durante Call of Hope (Llamado de Esperanza) un programa de Pascua, llevado a cabo del 27 de Marzo al 10 de Abril, los participantes de corto plazo se nos unieron para un entrenamiento y para salir a las calles a compartir del amor de Dios. Para algunos, este fue la primera experiencia en compartir su fe. Ora para que puedan ver el obrar de Dios en y a través de sus vidas y capten la visión del ministerio a largo plazo. Muchas personas están más interesadas en ir a la iglesia y en su fe durante la Pascua, lo que conduce a tener oportunidades para compartir el amor de Dios. Con más de 300 idiomas que se hablan en Londres, tener la literatura correcta para entregar a alguien es vital. Inglés es el ‘idioma comercial’, pero Dios a menudo habla en forma más eficaz cuando lo hace en el ‘idioma del corazón’. Esto es por lo que tenemos una gran variedad de literatura: 199 idiomas en stock, incluyendo árabe, inglés, turco, persa y también zarma, que se habla en Niger. En el año 2009, distribuimos 109 343 piezas de literatura a través de nuestro ministerio y en asociación con otras iglesias y misiones.

Un recurso clave son los 30 000 nuevos DVD de la película Jesús. Dos ediciones con dieciséis idiomas (inglés en ambos). Estos DVD tendrán un gran impacto en muchas más personas que viven o visitan la ciudad. ¡Qué oportunidad para hablar con personas con 31 idiomas en nuestro bolsillo! Ora para que Dios movilice a personas que busquen a Jesús y que tengamos literatura en el ‘idioma de su corazón’. Ora para que Dios continúe proveyendo finanzas para hacer esto posible.

Turquía: Por tres años Thomas y Anna han vivido en un edificio que tiene la frase “This is God’s House” [Esta es Casa de Dios] en árabe grabadas en la pared de piedra. Es difícil vivir en un cuarto piso con dos niños pequeños. Pero ellos perseveraron, orando por sus vecinos. Anna había tenido oportunidades de compartir las escrituras y orar con varias mujeres, sus amigas y parientes.

Una pareja de ancianos, nunca los había saludado, ni visitado ni invitado a su casa. Un día, su hijito de dos años se acercó al anciano y le besó la mano, el saludo tradicional para mostrar respeto a los ancianos. Este simple acto cambió todo. El anciano se mostró sobrecogido de emoción y, con lágrimas en sus ojos, le dijo a Thomas y Anna: “Todos ustedes deberían venir ahora y tomar el té con nosotros.” Cuando se sentaron juntos, él comenzó a contarles su vida. Durante un festival anual musulmán, él había sacrificado una vaca que, mientras agonizaba, lo pateó en la cara, causándole la pérdida de algunos dientes y estuvo dos días en el hospital. Esto lo llevó a pensar: “¿Debería mi sacrificio a Dios patearme los dientes?” Este anciano ha leído la Biblia y ha hecho muchas preguntas a Thomas y Anna. Ahora tienen una amistad que crece día a día, todo causado por un acto inocente de un niño honrando a sus ancianos. Ora por la “Casa de Dios” en un pueblo conservador de Turquía y por más apertura con los vecinos.

Asia Central: Cuando Dios envió a Jeremías a la casa del alfarero, él sabía que varios miles de años más tarde Él estaría trabajando en el corazón de un hombre en Asia Central a través de un dibujo animado de plastilina. Miracle Maker [El Hacedor de Milagros] fue traducido el año pasado a un idioma de Asia Central y ha tenido un impacto inminente. Will* le dio una copia a su amigo Bahodir* quien no se cansó de verla y reverla. La semana pasada, había visto el video más de cinco veces, cuando visitó a Will lleno de preguntas. Luego de varias horas inmersos juntos en la Palabra, Will guió a Bahodir para encontrarse con Cristo. Ora para que Bahodir sea el primero de muchos en Asia Central, que movilizados por “El Hacedor de Milagros”, entreguen sus vidas en las manos del Alfarero.

El enfoque principal de un curso para padres fue el Amor Saludable. Aquí hay algunos comentarios luego de la segunda sesión:

• “Soy madre de dos hijos, nunca los besé ni los abracé. Luego del entrenamiento, llegué a casa, besé a mi hijo de 7 años y lo abracé, mientras le decía que lo amo mucho. Mi muchachito me miró estupefacto, tratando de esconder las lágrimas que rodaban por sus mejillas. Lloré con mi hijo y nos sentamos juntos por un rato tratando de recuperar tiempo perdido.”

• “Mi cuarta hija Nasiba, de 5 años, es la más traviesa de mis seis hijas. Me frustra su comportamiento. Luego del entrenamiento, llegué a casa y la llamé. Mirándolo a los ojos le dije que la amo mucho. ¡Ella se quedó paralizada! ‘Mami, ¡eso no es verdad! Amas a Asal, amas a Noushin, amas a Nargis, amas a Mitra y a Gulshan. Las amas a ellas, ¡pero no a mí!’ De nuevo le dije cuánto la amo. Ella comenzó a llorar y me pidió que se lo repitiera una y otra vez. Desde ese día, ha habido un cambio en su comportamiento. Todavía estoy impresionada de lo que pueda hacer el AMOR.”

movimientos misioneros emergentes

Bangladesh: Recientemente, 20 creyentes ‘más maduros’ se reunieron para una noche de enseñanza. Nos animó oírlos repetir la historia de Moisés a su profesor. Estamos deseosos de ver que su fe madura afecte sus comunidades y familias. Un hermano viajó a otro país para escuchar lo que Dios está haciendo allí a través de OM. Él es el primer miembro de nuestro equipo en trabajar en otro país, y está trabajando duro ayudando en un orfanato y en escuelas, pero está compartiendo con gente de Bangladesh que vive allí.

México: El personal de OM México decidió pasar los Viernes haciendo ministerio conversando con quienquiera que Dios les ponga en el camino. Uno de ellos decidió llevar una consola de video juegos X-Box a un parque, lo cual atrajo a muchos niños y adolescentes para jugar y escuchar de Jesús. Desafortunadamente también atrajo la atención de un hombre armado que le pidió la consola al muchacho de OM.

Una semana después, el hombre regresó al parque a buscar al muchacho de OM, que todavía jugaba con los niños, pero sin la X-Box. El hombre se disculpó por robarle la consola y dijo que también quería oír la historia de Jesús. En unos pocos encuentros, el ex delincuente entregó su vida a Cristo. Luego trajo a otros para encontrarse con el muchacho de OM, para que también puedan escuchar de Jesús.

¡Alabado sea el Señor por estas vidas transformadas en la ciudad de México! Ora para que el equipo reúna el dinero para reemplazar la X-Box, y ora por el equipo mientras sigue haciendo ministerio los Viernes en la ciudad de México.

Pakistán: 25 señoritas participaron de un Campamento de Entrenamiento Bíblico para Damas. Se realizó del 16 al 27 de Febrero. Cuarenta hombres asistieron a un Campamento de Caballeros del 2 al 13 de Marzo. La Conferencia La Gran Comisión se realizó en Febrero en asociación con otras organizaciones respetables y se pudo ver a 86 pastores y líderes aprendiendo las características de una iglesia saludable, plantación de iglesias y diferentes maneras de entusiasmar a los miembros de la iglesia a completar la Gran Comisión. Un pastor comentó: “He aprendido a través de esta conferencia cómo renovar mi pasión. Reconozco que sin pasión la iglesia no puede crecer.

Antes de una reunión juvenil, el equipo masculino visitó diferentes hogares y calles con literatura. Un gran número de jóvenes varones se reunieron en aquel lugar, así que el equipo los desafió a compartir en sus áreas respectivas y a no desanimarse bajo ninguna circunstancia. ¡El entusiasmo mostrado por ellos fue inspirador!

iniciativas pioneras

Nepal: Ocho personas se dividieron en dos grupos (hombres y mujeres) y fueron hacia el lejano oeste y el norte por dos meses llevando el amor de Jesús a las aldeas remotas. Uno de ellos informó que, “nuestro grupo regresó a un área remota y montañosa donde el budismo es muy fuerte, cerca de la frontera con el Tíbet; fuimos con un pastor tibetano. Compartimos el amor de Dios con más de cien personas, distribuimos ropa y proyectamos películas de Jesús. Algunos se convirtieron, así que estamos planeando volver para ayudarlos a caminar con Dios. OM también promueve la conciencia de los derechos humanos en las iglesias locales, así como de cuidado de la salud VIH/SIDA, tráfico humano, el peligro de las drogas y capacitación agrícola. Necesitamos a los entrenadores correctos para todos estos asuntos. Apoyamos a doce niños a través de AIDSLink Nepal, proveyéndoles para las cuotas escolares y el cuidado de la salud. Además ayudamos mensualmente a 18 familias.
