A Broken Man with a Broken Leg

I live in a city of dirty, narrow streets crowded with lumbering buses and impatient motorcycles. On the edge of one of these haphazard roads sat an elderly man crippled from an accident years ago. His leg did not heal properly because he did not have money to go to the hospital. The injury left him without work and begging on the street.

When I first saw the man’s poorly bandaged, useless leg, I asked him if I could pray for him and he agreed. Through prayer I was able to show the love of Christ to this broken man. I could only pray in my own language, which the man did not understand, but his face radiated his thanks.

Encouraged by his open response, I visited the man many times. Each time I attempted to talk with him in broken Nepali and be a friend. He was always excited to receive prayer for his leg and even more for his life.

After several weeks I was passing by the area where he usually begs and he waved to me with a big smile. Although I was in a hurry and didn’t really want to spend a lot of time with him that day, I felt convicted to go over.

I stood in awe as the old man demonstrated how he could now walk with very little assistance from his crutches and told me that the pain that had tormented him for years was now virtually gone. Once again he asked me to pray for his leg. He told me that he has been getting better day by day and gestured towards heaven, indicating that he understood where the healing really came from.
