India
Jesus brought love and freedom to the poor and the oppressed. We demonstrate His compassion and oppose injustice to bring about spiritual and social transformation in the world’s second largest nation.
India – Transformed from Within
The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour. Luke 4:18-19
A Land of Contrasts
India, the world’s second largest nation is characterised by contrast and contradiction. India’s rich are getting richer, while her poor are sinking deeper into a seemingly unbreakable cycle of poverty and deprivation. While privileged and educated people are discovering a world of opportunity, centuries-old traditions of segregation and oppression continue. For the low caste and Dalit-Bahujan people (untouchables) there seems no hope of a better life.
Training and Equipping
OM India Ministries is committed to ending this type of oppression on all levels and emphasizing education, economics, human development, social justice and spiritual transformation. Our ministries are focused on the Dalit-Bahujan people.
OM has inspired a rapidly growing church movement committed to partnering and working within society and not outside it. OM India Ministries is dedicated to training and equipping national Indian Christian workers as instruments of culturally sensitive, innovative methods of transformation.
Serving
Almost 2,000 Indian men and women are devoted to serving Christ in their nation with OM India Ministries. These national workers serve in Good Shepherd Community Churches, Dalit Education, Advocacy and Human Rights, Theological Education and Personnel Development and Women’s Ministry and Empowerment.
Chandpa, a Dalit, is married with two children. Two years ago, they lived in dire poverty. Her husband’s meagre income as a daily-wage construction worker was insufficient. Chandpa learned about the Dalit Education Centre’s Self Help Group (SHG) and became a member. She learned how a SHG functioned, proactively participated in its activities, and was soon unanimously elected as its president. In 2008, Chandpa received a loan from the SHG and bought a three-wheeled taxi. Her husband drove the taxi, earned a better income and within nine months repaid the loan. In 2009, Chandpa used another loan to start a small embroidery store. Together, she and her husband are earning a better income and recently bought a small house. The children are thrilled to now have a place to call their own. Chandpa says the SHG has given her and her family a life they could have never before imagined.
Abandoned by her husband and working as maid in three houses to look after her four children, Umma heard about the Good Shepherd Community Churche, started attending regularly and grew in faith. Anjali, her 12-year-old daughter, suffered constant headaches. A scan revealed a malignant tumour requiring long-term medication. Umma shared this in church, and they prayed for her. When she next went for tests, the tumour that was there for months could no longer be found. The doctor was speechless and asked Umma how this could be. She shared her faith in Jesus and that the church had prayed. Having never seen a miracle like this before, the doctor was interested to know about Jesus and asked if he could visit the church. The following Sunday, Umma testified before the church while Anjali stood by her side, her face beaming with joy.
