Country Profile: Germany / Deutschland
Germany... the land of thinkers and philosophers, the birthplace of Martin Luther and the reformation. Germany is a country of vibrant modern cities and sleepy villages. A country that has beautiful seas in the north and breath-taking mountains in the south. It is a country steeped in history, filled with medieval castles and historic kingdoms.
It is a country that was broken by the horrors of the Second World War, but a country that found new life in the economic boom of the 60’s and 70’s. It was that economic boom that has made Germany one of the strongest economic powers of the 20th century.
Germany was long divided by the Cold War, split into eastern and western sectors by the allied forces. But it was reunited after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Germany has a land mass of 357.050 km² and a population of 82,3 million, of which 75,5 million hold German citizenship. This makes Germany one of the most densely-populated countries in the world!
In Germany, a church building can be found in almost every village and town. In many villages, the local church is the largest and most beautiful building, but most of these churches are empty and unused. 31,2% of Germans are registered as Catholic, 30,5% as Protestants, but most of these “Christians” are only nominal Christians and the true figure is thought to be more like 3.9%. Atheism, Esotericism and Materialism are the growing 'religions' in Germany. An estimated 5% are Muslims, with growing tendencies.
Deetken Mill
In 1972, OM began working in Germany. Since 1982, the OM Germany home office has been operating from a 200-year-old former mill in the town of Mosbach in southwest Germany. The building, which also operates as a Christian conference centre, is affectionately known as the “Mill”.
Fifty workers are based in the “Mill” taking care of administrative duties such as finance, personnel care and public relations. Short-term outreaches and the logistics of TeenStreet Germany are also coordinated from there.
There is a full-time kitchen, household team and maintenance team to take care of the running of the conference facilities on site. OM Germany offers a variety of seminars and workshops throughout the year and also offers the facilities to church groups for church retreats. OM Germany sends workers to German churches and Christian conferences to encourage Christians in Germany to support world mission through prayer and giving, and for mobilising the church into missions.
Since April 2008, a team from OM Germany and the headquarters of OM Ships International has been going to a nearby school twice a week to help 5th and 6th grade students with their homework, and to offer English conversation class to 9th grade students.
Team North
Since 2005, OM has had a team working in northern Germany. This team works in Hamburg, the second largest city in Germany. Most of the people consider God, the church and Christian faith outdated and irrelevant. Yet there is a growing interest in faith in general and in spiritual matters. Together with local churches. the team wants to meet these people in their spiritual search and lead them to Christ. As in other large cities, many people in Hamburg are facing problems such as poverty, unemployment and broken families. Those great needs cannot be ignored. In partnership with local churches, Team North seeks to reach out to children and youth who come from difficult situations. The teams goal is to share with the people of Hamburg the Good News of Jesus and give them an opportunity to receive him as their Saviour.
In addition, the team offers different Global Challenge opportunities to teams in northern Germany.
Generation Hope Ministry
Workers with Generation Hope (working within the Team North and Team East) want to challenge teenagers to live for Jesus without compromise, and to encourage them to use their potential to change the world. Generation Hope exists to bring hope to teenagers by sharing the love of Jesus with them and by encouraging them to develop a true personal friendship with Jesus.
Generation Hope aims to challenge teenagers to be carriers of hope through short-term TiM (Teens in Mission) outreaches, through "extreme days", outreaches and seminars and workshops, but most importantly by building relationships with Christian teenagers to encourage and equip them to live Christian lives.
Team Xenos
The Xenos team (Greek: for stranger) works with immigrants and asylum seekers in the south of Germany. They meet them with love, friendship and acceptance, introducing them to Jesus and showing them what it means to be a follower of Christ. This happens through church services, children’s programs and home visitation. The team offers practical help with legal advice and language coaching. The workers from the Xenos team also offer workshops for churches and those interested in showing the love of Jesus to minority groups.
Since the end of 2008, the Xenos team has been operating a mulitcultural coffee-shop for the many immigrants in the city. It serves as a meeting point to build relationships and as a centre where the team can offer practical services.
Team East
OM Germany´s newest team, Team East, is located in the city of Halle an der Saale. Halle belongs to the former East Germany (Democratic Republic) and still suffers the legacy of communism. Hopelessness is found everywhere, and both the unemployment rate and divorce rate are very high.
Team East wants to demonstrate and share God´s desire to bring hope and a future through Jesus Christ. The team plans to run a Christian youth café to build relationship and share their lives with young people in the city.

Deutschland ist ein Land der pulsierenden, modernen Städte und kleinen, verschlafenen Dörfern. Ein Land mit der Nord- und Ostsee im Norden und atemberaubenden Bergen im Süden. Ein Land, durchdrungen von der Geschichte und voller mittelalterlicher Schlösser und historischen Königreichen.
Es ist das Land, das durch den Horror des Zweiten Weltkriegen zerbrach, aber durch den Wirtschaftsaufschwung der 1960er und 1970er zu neuem Leben fand. Dies machte Deutschland zu einer der stärksten Wirtschaftsmächte im 20. Jahrhundert.
Deutschland war jahrelang durch den Eisernen Vorhang in zwei Teile geteilt: West- und Ostdeutschland. Doch mit dem Fall der Berliner Mauer 1989 feierte das Land seine Wiedervereinigung. Deutschland ist 357 050 km² groß und hat eine Bevölkerung von 82,3 Millionen, von denen 75,5 Millionen die deutsche Staatsbürgerschaft haben. Das macht Deutschland zu einem der am dichtesten besiedelten Länder der Welt.
In Deutschland findet man in fast jedem Dorf oder Stadt ein Kirchengebäude, oft ist es sogar das schönste und höchste Gebäude. Aber die meisten dieser Kirchengebäude sind leer und ungenutzt. 31,2% der Deutschen sind katholisch, weitere 30,5% evangelisch, aber die meisten davon sind nur Namenschristen. Etwa 3,9% der Deutschen sind entschiedene Christen. Die wachsenden „Religionen“ in Deutschland sind: Atheismus, Esoterik und Materialismus. Der Anteil der Muslime wird auf 5% geschätzt, mit wachsender Tendenz.
Deetken Mühle
1972 begann die OM-Arbeit in Deutschland. Seit 1982 ist das Heimatbüro von OM Deutschland in einer über 200 Jahre alten Mühle in Mosbach, Süddeutschland. Die Mühle, wie das Gebäude umgangssprachlich genannt wird, dient auch als christliches Konferenzzentrum.
50 Mitarbeiter arbeiten in der Mühle und kümmern sich um administrative Angelegenheiten wie Finanzen, Personalbetreuung, Öffentlichkeitsarbeit, die Organisation von Kurzeinsätzen und die Logistik von TeenStreet Deutschland.
Ein vollzeitliches Küchen- und Haushaltsteam sorgt für das Wohlbefinden der Mitarbeiter und Gäste; das technische Team kümmert sich um Baumaßnahmen und die Instandhaltung des Mühlengebäudes. OM Deutschland bietet das ganze Jahr über in der Mühle verschiedene Seminare an. Gemeindegruppen können ihre Freizeiten in der Mühle verbringen.
Außerdem gehen OM-Mitarbeiter regelmäßig in Gemeinden und zu christlichen Konferenzen, um Christen in Deutschland zu ermutigen, die Weltmission durch Gebet und Finanzen zu unterstützen, sowie Gemeinden für Mission zu mobilisieren.
Seit 2008 geht ein Team von OM Deutschland und dem Büro von OM ships International, das auf demselben Gelände ist, zweimal die Woche in eine nahegelegene Schule. Dort betreuen sie Fünft- und Sechstklässler im Rahmen einer Hausaufgabenbetreuung. Schüler der 9. Klasse können an einem Englisch-Konversations-Kurs teilnehmen.
Team Nord
Seit 2005 gibt es ein OM-Team im Norden Deutschlands. Das Team Nord arbeitet in Hamburg, der zweitgrößten Stadt Deutschlands. Obwohl auch hier die meisten Menschen Gott, die Kirche und den christlichen Glauben als veraltet und irrelevant bewerten, zeigen viele zunehmend wieder Interesse an Glauben und spirituellen Dingen. Das Team möchte zusammen mit Gemeinden diesen Menschen in ihrer geistlichen Suche begegnen und sie zu Christus führen. Wie in anderen Großstädten sind viele Menschen mit Problemen wie Armut, Arbeitslosigkeit und zerrütteten Familien konfrontiert. Diese große soziale Not kann nicht ignoriert werden. In Partnerschaft mit Gemeinden hilft das Team Nord Kindern und Jugendlichen aus schwierigen Verhältnissen. Ziel des Teams ist es, dass die Menschen in Hamburg die Gute Nachricht von Jesus erfahren und ihn als Retter erkennen.
Zusätzlich bietet das Team verschiedene Global Challenge-Kurzeinsätze in Norddeutschland an.
Generation Hope
Die Mitarbeiter von Generation Hope, die im Team Nord und Team Ost mitarbeiten, möchten Teenager herausfordern, kompromisslos für Jesus zu leben. Die Teenager werden ermutigt, ihr Potenzial zu nutzen, um die Welt zu verändern. Generation Hope existiert, um Teenagern durch die Liebe Jesu Hoffnung zu bringen und sie zu ermutigen, eine echte und persönliche Freundschaft mit Jesus zu leben.
Generation Hope möchte, dass Teenager Hoffnungsträger sind, und bieten dazu TiM (Teens in Mission) -Einsätze, Extreme Days und verschiedene andere Einsätze, Seminare und Workshops an. Doch am wichtigsten ist es Generation Hope, Beziehungen zu Teenagern aufzubauen und sie zu ermutigen und auszurüsten, im Alltag evangelistisch zu leben.
Team Xenos
Das Xenos-Team (griechisch: Fremder) arbeitet mit Immigranten und Asylbewerbern in Süddeutschland. Sie begegnen ihnen mit Liebe, Freundlichkeit und Akzeptanz, machen sie mit Jesus bekannt und zeigen ihnen, was es bedeutet, ein Nachfolger Jesu’ zu sein. Das geschieht durch Gottesdienste, Kinderprogramme und Hausbesuche. Das Team bietet praktische Hilfe, wie juristische Beratung und Sprachkurse an, aber auch Seminare für Gemeinden und Interessierte an der Arbeit unter Ausländern.
Seit Ende 2008 hat das Xenos-Team ein internationales Café für die vielen Immigranten der Stadt. Das Café dient als Treffpunkt, um Beziehungen aufzubauen und als ein Zentrum, wo das Team praktische Dienste anbietet.
Team Ost
Das neuste Team von OM Deutschland, das Team Ost, ist in Halle an der Saale, einer Stadt in der ehemaligen DDR. Halle leidet noch immer an den Folgen des Kommunismus, Hoffnungslosigkeit ist überall zu finden und sowohl die Arbeitslosen- wie auch die Scheidungsrate sind sehr hoch.
Das Team Ost will Hoffnung und Zukunft durch Jesus Christus aufzeigen und weitergeben. Dies soll durch ein evangelistisches Jugendcafé geschehen, in dem Beziehungen mit Jugendlichen aufgebaut werden sollen.
