Business Development Consultant: Central AsiaPoverty in rural Central Asia forces many men to seek work in Russia for months or years at a time. Labor migrants typically work in difficult and dangerous conditions, have questionable legal status within Russia and may become victims of racially-motivated violence. While labor migration enables many rural families to survive, the long-term economic benefits are limited as labor migration drains skills, resources and creativity away from the local economy. In addition, the rates of family breakdown and HIV infection are growing rapidly as a direct result of labor migration.
