A good education

OM International

Valaven is in Grade Two at a Dalit Education Center in India. Although his parents are illiterate Dalits, they always wanted their children to receive an English-language education.

For a while they sent Valaven to a private school many miles away from the village. The school was expensive, but Valaven’s parents worked diligently and saved money to cover the fees. However, after a year, their financial resources could no longer support Valaven’s education. Discouraged, Valaven’s parents removed their son from the school.

In 2006, a Dalit Education Centre was opened in the town and Valaven was enrolled.  His academic performance improved rapidly and his parents were impress. In 2007, they enrolled their daughter at the school. Valaven’s mother says, “When people who know English talk to my children, they are impressed.

They take notice of their good language skills. Sometimes when I take the children to the nearby clinic, the doctor asks the children questions concerning their health in English and the children immediately respond. The doctor is always impressed and tells me that the children must continue their education. Thank you to the staff of the DEC!”
