Myanmar Cyclone update

Myanmar cyclone : collecting water receptaclesThe cyclone that hit Myanmar two weeks ago has devastated a wide area, causing extensive damage and huge numbers of casualties. Stagnant water and monsoon conditions are posing significant health risks and cholera is spreading. Please pray for those living outside the capital who are not receiving aid; the death tolls are mounting and conditions are appalling. National workers are permitted to help, but no foreigners may offer aid: please pray that this ban will be lifted.

Workers have been able to deliver a truck-load of supplies to one of the worst-hit areas including blankets, water purification tablets, medicines and empty plastic drums to hold water. Candles have been distributed as there is still no electricity in the villages. One widow had her shack cut in half by a falling coconut tree and received help to rebuild her home.

One aid worker shared, "People lined the streets, waiting for someone to help them, to give them something, anything. They could not wait in their homes because their houses were no more. When food was given out to these people living on the side of the streets they calmly lined up even though they knew there was not enough for everyone. They gratefully accepted what they were given."
