Water for the Thirsty

Sitting under a walnut tree in the afternoon sun doing  research with a local farmer, I was shocked to hear he keeps a cow not for meat or milk but for the dung it will produce for next winter's heating. His neighbour is a feudal worker on the collective farm, getting paid just 14 litres of oil and a few sacks of flour as his year's salary. An 81 yr old granny gets a £4 a month pension, the only money coming in for her whole family. One woman can't even afford the 12p round trip by bus to the town centre. This is a community in Tajikistan where we are doing needs assessment for a new development project. It is poor and on the fringe of the city. The farmer goes on to explain that in winter there is no electricity for 4 months, the water pipes freeze and crack, and there is just one public well for a community of 1350 people. There are some private ones but people are ashamed to beg their neighbours for water. Also, many children contract hepatitus and dysentry from drinking dirty water. We worked hard meeting city officials this winter and are thankful for good relationships with the town hall and local community leaders. We plan to continue the needs assessment but it is already clear there is a real need for clean wells and health education in this community.

  • Assistant Regional Director & Project Manager
    Our team in a Central Asian city which has been the historical gateway between Central Asia and the Indian continent is in need of an ASSISTANT REGIONAL DIRECTOR,PROJECT MANAGER. This person would assist the Regional Director in overseeing the programs and Managing the office and finances of projects. He would also be instrumental in developing new projects as the team capacity will expand. (M)

    A recently established carpet weaving project in a Central Asian country is presently in need of an BOOKKEEPER. They would help to manage daily cash flow, disburse funds, keep the ledgers, etc. This is a voluntary, non-salaried position. (C)
  • Community Development Project Manager
    Our Community Development Program in an ancient Central Asian city which used to be a center along the fabled Silk Road is in need of a PROJECT MANAGER. This work is focused on empowering poor women in and around this city. This person would be involved in managing existing programs and expanding/developing new ones. (M)
  • Construction Project Manager
    Our team in a charming Central Asian town surrounded with lush green rice paddies and wheat fields in summer is looking towards expanding programs in education to include reconstruction of schools. For this to be possible we need a CONSTRUCTION PROJECT MANAGER. This person would initiate and oversee construction projects working with a national counterpart. (M)

    Our NGO, located in "roof of the world" capitol Central Asian city, is looking for a new COUNTRY DIRECTOR. This should be a person of vision and compassion, desiring to make a difference in a land weary of war.
