A small but mighty church

Last week a group in the Near East went on a prayer drive in a part of the city that desperately needs prayer. In the area of about 20,000 people, a small evangelic church faces opposition and problems. This small church is surrounded by at least 20 mosques. The main mosque’s leader often causes problems for the church with the local authorities and the Muslim brotherhood. The pastor has been called in for interrogation many times and has also been threatened by local Muslims.

Please pray for this small church to be able to stay true to God. Pray for the young people in the church that face pressure to become friends with and even date young Muslim girls and boys.

The pastor and his wife have been labouring in the church for nine years; pray for their renewed strength. Pray also for the financial situation for the family, as there is sometimes no money for milk for their two children.

• Pray for the nominal Christians involved in magic.
• Pray for the people involved in the brothels in the area.
 

UNA PEQUEÑA PERO PODEROSA IGLESIA

La semana pasada un grupo de personas en Oriente Cercano condujeron sus vehículos por una zona de la ciudad orando por ella. En dicha zona viven aproximadamente 20.000 personas, hay una pequeña iglesia evangélica que enfrenta gran oposición y numerosos problemas. También está rodeada por más de 20 mezquitas. El líder de la mezquita principal les causa problemas con las autoridades locales y con la hermandad musulmana. El pastor ha sido interrogado muchas veces y amenazado por los musulmanes.

Por favor ora por esta pequeña iglesia para que pueda mantenerse firme en la verdad de Dios. Ora por los jóvenes de la iglesia que sufren presión para que entablen amistad y aún “salgan” con chicas o chicos musulmanes.

El pastor y su esposa han trabajado en esa iglesia por nueve años; ora por renovación de sus fuerzas. Ora también por la situación financiera de la familia, puesto que a veces no tienen suficiente para comprar leche para sus dos hijos.

Job opportunities in Near East

  • Hospitality Ministry
    A couple or one - two individuals fully dedicated, who will help out with logistics for newcomers to the field; communicate with possible partnering colleges who send believing researchers; give
    orientation and training to those coming, and other.
  • School Teacher, ages 5-12
    Primary school teachers (i.e for children ages 5-12 approx) are needed for several small schools run for Christian workers in the Near East, West & Central Asia. Most of these schools are small, so an individual teacher will teach children of different ages and 'grade' levels. The teaching medium in most cases is English, although teachers who can teach in German or Korean are also required.
  • Special Educational teacher for children with mental impairment
    Together with a project overseer, structure and set up a program to train and encourage development of children with mental impairment from a nomadic background.
  • Reach Bedouins with the gospel
    “Bedouin” is the Arabic word for “desert dweller”. Who will share the source of “living water” with the Bedouins in the Middle East? Do you have a passion to share your faith with this people group?
    You can live in a rural area, study Arabic and reach Bedouins for Christ. Developing relationships, visiting people and seeking to share the gospel is expected from day one.
  • Evangelist/Discipler/Church Planter
    Be part of a focused church-planting ministry team sharing the gospel with and discipling Arabs (or Kurds). The focus is on learning Arabic (or Kurdish) well, adjusting culturally and developing good ministry skills. This usually involves full-time language study for the first two years, although this can often be combined with other relevant interests (teaching, sport, music, etc.). Developing relationships and seeking to share the gospel is expected from day one. We have a number of ministry teams in both urban and rural locations.

Yazidies, Student Ministries and Relief Projects

The growth of the Druze fellowship from 125 to 180 members is great encouragement. The perseverance of the Yazidies (Zoroastrian) believers in the face of persecution challenges us. Praise God for families opening their homes and for five who were baptised lately.

The starting of a student ministry in a main city of the Near East is a great encouragement as they access the campus and have a place for students to drop in for personal talks, sharing, watching Christian films and even an Alpha course.

Through relief projects we helped 437 families with food packages, kerosene stoves, mattresses, plastic carpets to cover dirt floors and roof repairs to mud houses in Kurdistan.

A ministry of Arabs reaching Arabs is quite effective between different religious groups (Druze among Shi’as) in neighbouring countries (Jordanians among Syrians).
