Pastor Pirate at the Losevo camp

Our camp’s theme, taken from the movie “Pirates of the Caribbean” and freely interpreted to put it into a godly context, was an apt description of our location. After a long, bumpy bus ride we were rewarded by the stunning nature of Karelia at Lake Ladoga. The camp site was on a small peninsula, so we were literally at world’s end, only surrounded by water.

The camp was run jointly by the “Union of Christians” church from St. Petersburg and OM, and took place from June 16-20. There were 70 “pirates” (both youth and helpers) from a total of 17 different churches from St. Petersburg! The fact that so many churches were represented at the camp is quite amazing and in hindsight it gives some perspective to the little struggles we had in the preparation process. Surely our adversary doesn’t like it when we are moving together in unity!

Over three days we unfolded the theme by looking into what we need for direction in life. We identified four key words which all start with a “K” in Russian. The words all relate to marine language and stood for: team, map, compass and, last but not least, captain. Pastor Dmitry spoke very clearly about the one Captain who was willing to lay down his life for ours. We gave the participants the chance to symbolically, through little pieces of paper, bring their concerns, prayers, sins and lives to the cross. These were then taken to the rocky end of our little island, where they were burnt in the camp fire. That moment was very sacred and hopefully remains a special moment for many.

The church is already hoping and planning to have another camp in the autumn and in the winter!
