In the aftermath of the murder of a Hindu swami by unknown assailants, mobs attacked the Christian community across the eastern state of Orissa, India. On Monday, August 26, 2008, a 12-hour strike called by hardliner Hindu nationalist organizations resulted in spreading violence. Twelve of thirty districts were reportedly affected by the violence. According to reports collected by the All India Christian Council, at least five people have died, one nun was raped, and hundreds of churches, Christian homes, Christian non-profit organizations' offices, and Christian schools were heavily damaged or destroyed.

Among the schools attacked, was a Dalit Education Center located in the Kandhamal District of Orissa. This school was started in April 2008 to cater to the children of victims of the communal attacks that took place in the months of December and January 2008. Late evening on August 25, 2008, the temporary school building that had been rented by the school's Community Development Officer (CDO) from a local Dalit Christian was set ablaze. Mercifully, no children, staff or parents were at the school and the CDO and teacher made a narrow escape, hiding with many other Christian Dalits in the surrounding forests and mountains, fearing future attacks.

Communal attacks continue to take place in the state. OM personnel are safe, but fear for their safety. Some of them living in volatile areas have gone into hiding. The Community Development Officer of the Dalit Education Center in Bograi, Orissa, has also received threats. Please pray for protection.
