HUNGARY: The Yankees Play the Cubs in Front of a Large Crowd with TV Coverage!
I am sure that got your attention. It is all true but let me explain! OM-Sportlink in partnership with the Hungarian Baseball Association and the Erd Baseball Club hosted the second annual camp for Hungarian Baseball Youth players between the ages of 13-15. 18 participants from 5 different Hungarian team’s, formed two teams to play in an exhibition game organized for the city and parents on the last night to conclude our one week camp. Ingo Gottwald, the head coach of the Hungarian National men’s team and Hungarian National youth team was our ‘head coach’ for the week and he graciously donated Cubs and Yankees t-shirts and hats for our closing game. We provided live commentary for the crowd numbering 40-50, small by American standards but for Hungary that was a large crowd! The local Erd TV was out to film the first inning and also record two interviews!
Besides the 3 hour skills training in the morning and 2 hour game each evening, the players received teaching on Christian character in the afternoon from the lives of young men in the Bible such as, Joseph, David and Jonathan.
A testimony of how successful the camp was came from Abigail, the daughter of Sports-link coordinator Terry Lingenhoel. She shared with the group at the beginning of the week that she did not really like baseball and was only attending because her Dad wanted her to come. At the end of the week she asked her Dad if he could plan the camp for next year also and invite all the same people! She also wants to start playing on the local youth team.
The camp included a special guest, Sam Dempster, the Milwaukee Brewers’ Associate Scout who helped coach for two days.
Praise the Lord that baseball can be used to introduce teenagers to Jesus and the power of the Gospel to change lives.
Terry Lingenhoel.
