Cyclone Nargis: Our response #13

OM International

Myanmar Cyclone: Bringing aid from boat to shore.Three staff and three volunteers brought rice, onions, mats, and building supplies to complete the fourth well.  They also donated bricks, sand, and cement to the villagers for the rebuilding of the school by the villagers within a week.  The team visited house to house, continuing to build relationships with the villagers and religious leaders.  One of the religious leaders expressed deep gratitude for the well:

“There has been no rain for the past three days.  When there is no rain, we used to carry drinking water from a town a four-hour boat trip away.  Now, because of the well, we won’t have to go for water, even in summer.”

One village contact was particularly impressed with the unity and team spirit from our group.  “Everyone is young but I never see you complain.  I want to know what your God teaches you.”  The team was able to tell her and give her literature.

Staff members and volunteers continue to visit villages again and again to distribute rice to families, giving out sixteen cups each to fifty families in one village, distributing ten bags of rice to 235 families in another district and ten bags of rice to 257 families in yet another area.  Each time they gave out literature as well, and plan to return when possible, with more help, and to answer villagers’ questions.

In another visit, staff and volunteers brought rice, instant noodles, onions, beans, salt, oil, paracetamol, and stationary for the school.  The goods were distributed to 124 families.  The villagers were so grateful, even preparing lunch for the team.  Apart from the supplies, the team also provided some financial assistance for rebuilding a bridge into the village, digging a well, and building a toilet at the primary school.  The villagers will complete the well and toilet within one week.

Team members are having increased opportunities to talk about their motivation as they continue with the relief efforts, thus offering both practical and spiritual help.
