Afghanistan needs the Spirit of God
OM International

Forget Hollywood, Palm Springs or islands off the coast of Dubai, Karte Char in Kabul, Afghanistan, is the place the celebrities are flocking too!! A celebrated Olympian has moved there. Yes, Rohullah Nikpai the first Afghan athlete to ever win an Olympic medal has moved in. How do we know you might ask? Well have a look at his house!
By winning the bronze medal in the men's under 58-kilogram taekwondo competition Rohullah Nikpai become a National hero overnight. Not only is his new house lavishly decorated in his honour, but a large archway draped with flags and pictures has been erected over the road outside his front door. Judging from the music and noise that emanated from his house in the week between the end of the Olympics and the start of Ramadan there have been many joyous celebrations of Afghanistan's first Olympic medal. Rohullah has become a house hold name and a symbol of hope for this struggling Nation.
Quite frankly, right now Afghanistan needs someone like Rohullah whose name means ‘Spirit of God’. The security situation in the country is probably at the lowest point that we have seen it since coming to Kabul over four years ago. Whilst Kabul remains secure and our day to day lives are largely unaffected, security in the regions has steadily deteriorated over the summer months and nearly all travel from Kabul to the regions by road is impossible now. This makes running projects in the regions and getting personnel there and back logistically very difficult for the organisations striving to help this country. We would appreciate your ongoing prayer for the stability of this country and for wisdom for all those making decisions about travel and work in the regions.
