Living in wonderland
Looking back – looking forwards – those were the emphases of our Missions Day on 15th September, on which we celebrated both 50 years of OM, and the leadership handover from Frank Hinkelmann to Philipp Eschbach. Dave Babcock, with his rich repertoire of stories from his Bible-smuggling days with the Greater Europe team, and Johan van Dam, OM Austria’s first field leader, kept the audience amused with accounts of former experiences and adventures. Leaders of the Evangelical Alliance and other missions and denominations within Austria paid tribute to the impact OM had had in this country, and warmly welcomed Philipp and his family to their new ‘heimat’.
Much tribute was paid to Frank’s wise leadership over the past 11 years. He may well go down in history as one of the main forces in breaking down distrust between Pentecostal and non-Pentecostal denominations. During his time in leadership in the EA (which will still continue) the Pentecostal denomination joined this union of churches, and today we are enjoying growing unity amongst Christians, and increasing working together in ministry.
That over 150 Christians would give up a Saturday to spend the day with us was a great encouragement. It was Philipp’s first time to meet most of them, and at the end of the day his reaction was: “Having a Missions Day was a terrific idea. Let’s do it again next year!”
