Under-age marriage averted

OM International

Three Asian women talkA 14-year-old girl, who is studying at a Dalit Education Centre in India, faced an uncertain future after her father committed suicide.  Her mother began to arrange a marriage for the girl with a family friend (who is already married and has a child by his first wife).  Indian team members were concerned and began to pray.

Under Indian law, it is illegal for anyone to marry before the age of 18 and bigamy carries a potential prison sentence.  Supported by other members of the community, the team members were able to explain the legal situation and God answered their prayer to prevent this marriage taking place.  When situations like this arise, teams need wisdom and faith to react sensitively.
