Lalit's StoryOM InternationalLalit is a nine-year-old boy from a Hindu Dalit family. When he heard from some neighbors about the English education given at a nearby Dalit Education Centre, he went to work for several weeks to earn some money to pay what he assumed would be the high enrollment fees. With his money, he approached the principal and school manager, asking to be admitted for study in the 2007-2008 academic year.Lalit’s family and older brothers work in the agricultural fields. They earn less than US $40 per month. They used to live together in an Indian ‘joint family’ (with grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles and children all under one roof). This arrangement, although crowded, helped the family pool their meager resources with others. However, in the last year, the adults in the family had a major dispute and Lalit and his immediate family members moved to another ‘home’ – really only a small hut on the edge of the village. They live three kilometers (1.8 miles) from the school, but consider the daily walk to worth the excellent education Lalit now receives. Pray for Lalit and hundreds like him who are studying at OM India's Dalit Education Centres and receiving the chance of a different life.
