 Chile is a country of startling contrasts and extreme beauty, with attractions ranging from the towering volcanic peaks of the Andes to the ancient forests of the Lake District.
It is located in the southwest of Latin America and is part of the Conosur - Argentina, Uruguay, Chile and Brazil. The country has a population of around fifteen million people; many of these people have a very strong sense of traditionalism and patriotism.
The Roman Catholic Church has lost much of its political power and less than fifteen per cent regularly attend church. In the Evangelical church, lack of theological education and leadership training has resulted in poor teaching, legalism, disunity and fragmentation. However, as Chile’s Christian leadership has become aware of this need and situation, they are now seeking for unity and cooperation.
OMs work began in Chile in the 1980s, through the visits of the Doulos and the old Logos. During the visits the Chilean church was challenged to get involved in world missions and many young people responded eagerly. In 1989 OM appointed representatives in Valparaiso, who started training young people for future missionary work. In 1995 the office was moved to Santiago as most evangelicals live in the capital. In total, around 170 Chileans have participated in the teams’ missionary training programme and 820 have assisted in evangelistic campaigns.
One of OM Chile’s ministry focuses is to provide practical missionary training to the Chilean Christians.
In March 2008 there will be a variety of projects including the Intensive Training programme, which is a nine month programme and the Adventure Team, which are three month outreaches. Both programmes will be involved in various outreaches including working with children’s homes, skateboarding and outreach through BMX biking. The team also intends to visit and help the homeless people in the area.
