Montenegro is one of the youngest countries in Europe, having declared independence in June of 2006. On the other hand, it is rich in both culture and history. In fact, rumors say that it is the only area in the Balkans that was never officially conquered by the Ottoman Empire. Crna Gora, the actual name in Serbian which translates as ‘Black Mountain,’ is a fitting description of the snowcapped mountainous regions found within its borders. The coastal areas are also breathtakingly beautiful with beaches and scenic coastal drives.
Once a part of former Yugoslavia, Montenegro has now separated from its previous ties with Serbia and is gradually working towards becoming more stable. Though it was able to escape much of the devastation experienced by its neighbors during 1990’s, it has still undergone economic hardships and political difficulties that have left their mark. It is a nation that has clung to its religious roots with 2/3 of its 700,000 population claiming ties to the Orthodox Church.
The OM ministry in Montenegro is just beginning and the opportunities are numberless. There are less than 100 believers in the whole country with only two Evangelical Churches and two church plants. The OM team will be centered in Bar and will primarily focus on reaching out to the youth of the city, with church planting as the long-term goal. Relationship building is of utmost importance and sharing the Gospel through friendship is emphasized.
