On the far west coast of continental Europe lies Portugal – a small nation with a rich historical and cultural heritage.  Famous for its port wine, its stunningly beautiful architecture and sun-drenched beaches, tourists flock to this country every year. Yet, just 30 years ago Portugal was ruled by an oppressive right-wing dictatorship, which sought to close the country to foreign influence.

Today, its 11 million inhabitants are shaking off this legacy but the result is an increasingly materialistic and secular society.

The majority of the population is still linked with traditional Catholicism, with a strong emphasis on the veneration of the Virgin Mary (the Queen of Portugal). The evangelical church remains extremely small (just 1.6 % of the population) but it is starting to grow and to become known and accepted in Portuguese society.

OM Portugal was launched in 1992 with a focus on short-term summer outreach teams, church planting, children’s ministry and literature.  The tragic death of OM Portugal leader Serafim Batista in 2003 brought about changes in the ministry with a re-emphasis on mobilising the Portuguese church and investing in the next generation.

TeenStreet has played a vital role in OM's ministry in Portugal. Hundreds of Portuguese teens have attended the conference in Germany and a dedicated group of volunteer helpers has been established.

Today, OM Portugal seeks to bring Jesus' hope to the next generation of teens and to mobilise the Portuguese Church for World Missions.

Care for the Pilgrims
8 May, 2007
Once again a small team will show love and care to pilgrims visiting Fatima in Portugal this week. Every year thousands of people travel to the site where three shepherd children described the appearance of the Virgin Mary in the early 20th Century. Desperate for healing or forgiveness, the pilgrims hope that their visit to the shrine will bring about the answer to their prayers.

Ecological Experience
11 Apr, 2006
A group of teenagers and their leaders are taking part in an unusual Teens In Mission experience in Portugal. The youngsters are staying at an ecological camp in the Algarve where they will help to carry out survey's of plants, animals and birds in this arid part of Portugal. "We will also attend lectures on the delicate balance of life in the area, study what the Bible says about caring for our environment and also enjoy some very Portuguese Easter food," said Ruth Spain from OM Portugal.
