The Republic of Ireland (Eire) is the only English-speaking Catholic nation. Ireland has a population of 4 million (a further 1.7 million live in Northern Ireland). While Catholicism is a major influence over the country and culture, few have a living relationship with God. Traditional 'religion' has failed to tackle serious social problems such as alcoholism, teenage pregnancy and a high suicide rate among young men.

Evangelical numbers have grown over the past 10 years and stand at 0.75% of the population, though according to Operation World, this is still the lowest percentage of any country in the English-speaking world.

New ministry

Although OM has a long history of involvement in Ireland, OM Ireland itself is one of the newest ministries in OM Europe. It was launched in 2002 to work alongside the Irish church for evangelism and world missions. The first Global Action team started in September 2002. A team is currently based in Donegal (Northwest Ireland), involved in running programmes for children and young people, recording "Word for the Day" radio broadcasts, and supporting a range of community projects.

The Big Red Bus is a vital part of OM Ireland’s work. A double-decker London bus, it is the ideal venue for children’s clubs and youth coffee bars. Several times a year, the team takes the bus to different parts of Ireland – working in partnership with Irish churches to share the Gospel through week-long programmes.

Job opportunities in Ireland

  • Big Red Bus Team Member
    As part of our Global Action team, the person will receive a practical and hands-on training and ministry opportunity particularly in creative children’s work.

    OM Ireland’s Big Red Bus is a double-decker bus converted for and widely used around Ireland for children’s ministry, youth work, and community outreach.

    Bus and team will be based in OM Ireland’s new ministry base, Lacken House, near Roscommon in the heart of the nation. From there the bus will run programmes in primary schools and with local churches in different parts of Ireland.

    You will have opportunities to share the love of Jesus in schools and with local churches through kids clubs and community events using puppets, crafts, games, drama and other creative ways. Additionally, there will be opportunities to do youth work using the bus as a coffee bar for teens and also street work in town centres.
  • Church Planting Team Member
    This is an opportunity to experience church planting alongside long-term church planters. OM Ireland has been asked by Calvary Mission to partner with them in their church planting work in West Ireland by placing Global Action team members with their experienced church planters.

    With the guidance of Calvary Mission workers and according to interests and talents, team members will be encouraged to join local societies and sports clubs to seek to integrate and gain opportunities for the gospel. You will be engaged each week in some of the following already established and regular means of evangelism: home visitation, literature distribution, children’s and youth work, open air, one-to-one bible studies, Christian bookshop and market bookstall ministry. You will also have planned opportunities to visit and do ministry in other parts of the country during their initial orientation and in OM Ireland’s ‘Impact Ireland’ summer outreach conference.
  • Global Action Team Leader
    We are looking for an individual or a married couple to lead a team of people on OM’s Global Action programme (6 month – 2 year training programme). 

    We would expect the person to receive a few months of orientation and training before taking on the responsibility of the GA team. This will give the person an opportunity to get to know the current OM Ireland team, settle into the country and get an understanding of the culture.

    Once the Global Action team join us, you will ensure that the team is involved in regular effective evangelistic outreach into the local community and region in partnership with other local Christians; lead the team in training and envisioning the local church for mission; be responsible for the pastoral care of the team and development of team life; and also oversee the team’s training programme.

    You will be accountable to OM Ireland’s National Evangelism Co-ordinator.
  • Personnel Coordinator
    The personnel department helps Irish people wanting to work with OM, from preliminary enquiries to them getting placed on the field, whether they are volunteering for a few weeks, participating in a short-term campaign or for longer.

Sean and Ana Mullan met on the Doulos and got married in 1984. They settled to do ministery work in Ireland, recruiting OM teams to work in different parts of the island.
