Welcome to the southern tip of Africa. Here, two great oceans meet, warm weather lasts most of the year, and big game roams just beyond the city lights. South Africa is the powerhouse of Africa, the most advanced, broad-based economy on the continent, with infrastructure to match any first-world country.
South Africa is known as the rainbow nation, with over 47-million people of diverse origins, cultures, languages (11 official languages) and beliefs. Two-thirds of South Africans call themselves Christian, although many churches combine Christian and traditional African beliefs, and many non-Christians also espouse these traditional beliefs. Other significant religions - though with much smaller followings - are Islam, Hinduism and Judaism.
OM has been working in South Africa since 1985, particularly focussed on mobilising the church into world missions. Building and maintaining relationships with South African churches, motivating them to become partners in world evangelism through praying, giving and going is at the core of this. Today we represent 500 missionaries working in South Africa as well as South Africans working throughout the world and one of our main functions is to support these missionaries. Our six-month training programme has a high reputation in OM international and in the last 21 years we have prepared more than 1700 students to enter the mission field.
South Africa faces many social concerns within the country and we want to make a difference to the local community as well. Through our AIDSHope ministry we address the HIV/AIDS crisis that is ravaging our land by working together with churches, schools and communities to promote abstinence and moral character. At the same time we reach out to the youth of South Africa through our Young Hope ministry as well as to the many immigrants that come to our land through Friends From Abroad.
