The church in Sweden today is marginalized. It has little authority or respect in a society, which believes that absolute truths cannot be tolerated.

12 - 21% of the population of Sweden are immigrants and they come from all over the world.  High unemployment plus social isolation means that integration into Swedish society is difficult for many, and there is an atmosphere of hopelessness in many communities.

“Sweden needs Christians who are willing to get involved in issues such as justice and racism”.

This would speak powerfully to people who feel like they have no way of being heard or changing the situation in which they live.

About OM Sweden:

OM Sweden was started in the late 60's, and its office is situated in a suburb called Råslätt. Today the office team consists of about 10 people serving more than 40 people on either Global Action or Global Service.

OM Sweden is running a field team in a suburb called Råslätt outside of Jönköping. The team today consists of two young women, ministering towards teenagers at a the local junior highs school. Råslätt is a suburb with many immigrants. They consist of about 50 different nationalities.

The plan is to increase the size of the field team in the future. Soon we hope to be able to welcome non swedish people to this ministry. Almost all the young people in the area speak English, which will make it easy for people from other countries to settle in.

Another plan is to launch a Global Challenge campaign on Råslätt using sports as a tool to reach out to people. Look out for more information about this in the future. Perhaps this would be something for you? If this is the case, then let us know.

Sunday School shares the greatest story
16 Apr, 2007
A team from OM Ships visited Sweden recently to do a recruiting tour. One of the highlights was a visit to an Arabic church in Stockholm. The team told the congregation about "The greatest story ever told" project, which provides every child that comes onboard OM ships a copy of the gospel in there own dialect in a cartoon form comic.

The team told them that 10 Swedish kronor could pay for four of these books to be printed. After the meeting, the Sunday school shared that they had been saving up money for months, so that they could all do something together during the summer (a Sunday school treat). But they had decided that the money should go to "The greatest story ever told" project instead, so that children around the world could hear about Jesus. They gave us the equivalent of over 50 Euro - all that they had saved! That's over 200 books!
