Chocolate, fondue, Heidi, mountains, watches, wealth, Calvin and the Red Cross are images that come to mind when asked about the country of Switzerland. But do you know the needs of the Swiss population?

Ministry opportunities in Switzerland

Chocolate. Fondue. Heidi. Mountains. Watches. Wealth. Calvin. The Red Cross. These are the images that first come to mind when people think of Switzerland.

Switzerland has a population of about 8.4 million people. More than a third of population have a foreign background. Immigrants and refugees from all over the world have come to Switzerland to seek a better future for themselves and their families.

Switzerland also has four unevenly-distributed official languages: German, French, Italian, Rumansch - and a wealth of dialects. Known as a wealthy country, social challenges include the breakdown of families, alcohol, drug abuse and violence.

Despite a rich history of Christianity, more and more people are leaving the official Protestant or Catholic state churches. Only a small percentage of Switzerland’s population claim to be Evangelical Christians - the same percentage as claim to be Muslim. New Age, Buddhism and Hinduism are widely spread throughout Switzerland. The church has become irrelevant to many Swiss citizens, despite the growing spiritual void.

Founded in 1976, OM Switzerland has two major ministries: the Swiss home offices in the German and French-speaking parts of Switzerland, and Focus Switzerland reaching out mostly to migrant people within Switzerland.

OM Home Offices in Zürich & Neuchâtel

The home offices exist to encourage and serve the local church and help individuals find their place of involvement locally and globally (i.e. Global Focus)

• Raise awareness for opportunities

• Raising funds for different projects worldwide

• Provide and organise relevant and up-to-date prayer requests and prayer events

The team continues to send out Swiss people on short-term outreaches, to training programmes and as long-term workers. TeenStreet is another focus of OM Switzerland, with the purpose of investing in young people and their local churches.

Our Stories

With 23 years of experience serving in the Middle East, Salome offers intercultural coaching for churches in Switzerland seeking to share God’s love in their international communities.
Hermann devotes his life to sharing God's love with Arabs, first learning their culture in the Middle East then training Europeans to welcome Arab tourists.
“…I shared that somehow, I needed to write a blog post about this experience,” says Anja. “Why? Because the life I described to you at the beginning of this post didn’t fit my definition of what the “classic life” of a missionary looks like. Getting noodles delivered to my bedside because I was sick while visiting a foreign country seemed to fit my definition a lot better.”
