Malawi is a landlocked country in central Africa, best known for the beautiful Lake Malawi, and for its friendly and open-hearted people. The country is quite mountainous and is bordered by Zambia, Mozambique and Tanzania. 85% of the rural population lives in poverty, surviving on less than one US dollar a day.
Malawi boasts of the highest percentage of Muslims in southern Africa especially within the Yao people. The Yao naturally embraced Islam and to be born a Yao is to be born a Muslim. Malawi ranks as the fourth-poorest country in the world. Combine this with the Yao tribe, where less than one percent of the population is Christian, and Malawi is in great need of the hope of Christ.
The work of OM is focussed in a prominently Muslim Area, amongst the Yao people. We want to see well trained church planters sent out to remote Yao villages, in order to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to bring about community transformation.
