Christmas Children’s Outreach (Birmingham)

We need people to join us for three weeks of children’s ministry in UK schools and churches this Christmas season. Working in a team of four or five people, you will learn a 30-minute show which you will then perform many times over a three week period. You will take part in puppet songs and stories, plus other elements of the programme if you are interested. We hope to have around 20 performances in schools and churches in various
parts of the UK. You can expect to see over 2000 children during the tour, the majority of which are in state schools, do not attend church and may have no other opportunity to hear the real message of Christmas.

Launched in 1988, LUKE Theatre Group’s performances are watched and enjoyed by thousands of children in UK primary schools each year. Using creative skills such as puppets, mime, conjuring, music and storytelling, the group’s shows are linked to the main Christian festivals: Easter, Harvest and Christmas. LUKE Theatre Group’s lively and exciting performances present the true meaning of these Christian celebrations in a way that children can understand and enjoy.

Participant profile

Experience of working with children, especially in a church context, would be useful but not essential. The main requirements are the ability to relate to children and a desire to help them discover God. You do not need to have used puppets before, as training will be given. You do need to have enough physical mobility to kneel behind a puppet stage, carry some light equipment and take part in lively action songs.

During performances you will be involved in various parts of the up-front programme. You will take part in puppet songs and stories as a puppeteer, and help to demonstrate the action songs we use. There may also be opportunities to teach bible verses or bible stories if you have skills in this area. There will also be plenty of time for you to help alongside church members in small group activities, such as making crafts and playing games.

OM UK is committed to safeguarding all those we work with, and you will be required to provide the relevant documentation during the application process.

During the majority of the time you will be staying in our training centre in Halesowen, near Birmingham, with other residents including students on our English language programme. It is possible that we may stay away overnight once or twice, in which case the churches we work with will provide accommodation.

Food will be provided. We need to know in advance of any special dietary needs (vegetarian, dairy-free, food allergies, gluten-free, etc.).

The nearest airport is Birmingham International Airport (BHX). You will then take the train to Old Hill Train Station.

You should be in average good health and have sufficient physical mobility to perform in children’s programmes and carry staging and equipment. You are responsible to obtain appropriate emergency health and medical insurance. If you think this requirement rules you out, talk to us and we will see what adjustments we may be able to make for you.

Nationals from the EU and EEA do not require a visa for the UK. If you do not hold an UK or EU passport, this outreach will not be open to you unless you have the right to work or study in the UK. We are not able to provide short-term study visas.

Arrival is before 5pm on 28th November, 2018. You can arrive anytime in the morning or early afternoon. Departure is on 22nd December, 2018.
