##CANCELLED## The Way of St. James (El Camino de Santiago)

The Way of St. James (El Camino de Santiago in Spanish) is a world renowned pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. Every year, thousands of people from all over the world come to Spain for this hike. It is also considered to be one of the most open areas in Europe to share the gospel, as most pilgrims are more open to listen, discuss and reflect while on the Camino. The purpose of this outreach is for you to share your testimony and the gospel with other people walking the Camino.

You will hike the Camino with your teammates. You will find yourself surrounded by pilgrims from Spain and the rest of the world and there will be lots of opportunities for you to make friends from all walks of life and share the gospel with them, both while you are walking and in the pilgrim hostels where you will sleep.

Upon arrival, there will be an orientation and a welcome dinner where you will meet the rest of the team. Be ready for prayer times, devotionals and engaging in conversations with your teammates and pilgrims. You will walk the Camino alongside pilgrims who are hiking for different reasons, some spiritual and some for the physical challenge. Each day you will walk from one town to another and spend the night in a pilgrim hostel, where you will be able to make new friends and reunite with pilgrims that you meet on the Camino.

Participant profile

We are looking for people who:

  • Want to grow and serve others-
  • Are able to walk on average 20-25 km per day
  • Want to be challenged physically, mentally and spiritually
  • Want to meet new people and share their faith
  • Are flexible, willing to listen and learn

Basic Spanish is not required but is highly recommended. You need to be able to communicate in English as that will be the team language and the language that most international pilgrims use.

You will stay in albergues (pilgrim hostels). You will sleep in a bed, bedding is provided. You will need to bring a towel.  Often the accommodation in the hostels is mixed I.e. men and women sleeping in the same dormitory.

Self-catering, buying food from the supermarkets in the towns where the hostels are and cooking it in the hostels. Another option is to eat at the restaurants in those towns. You will receive 105 € for all the meals while hiking (15 € per day).  If you want to eat at local restaurants instead of cooking, bring extra money for that. A meal at a restaurant costs around 10€.

You should arrive by plane into A Coruña airport (LCG), by train into the railway station San Cristóbal in A Coruña or by bus into the A Coruña bus station. You should arrive from 3pm onwards on the arrival day. On the departure day you can leave at any time.

This outreach is physically demanding. You need to be physically fit as the team will be hiking on average 20 to 25 km per day for a total of 120 km to 140 km over consecutive days in a region which could be rainy or warm.

A tourist visa (90 days) for most non-European participants will be given upon arrival at the airport. However check with your local Spanish embassy what the requirements are for your specific country and if you need a letter of invitation.

This is an EVANGELISTIC OUTREACH where you will need to be intentional in speaking to other pilgrims about Jesus. Our aim is to SHARE THE GOSPEL with other pilgrims. This outreach is NOT for you if you want to do the Camino for personal reflection or personal time with God.
