A virtual community

In September, nine participants from across the world join a virtual Missions Discipleship Training (MDT) hosted from the UK.

Even in the midst of a global pandemic, essential training and discipleship continue. We are governed by restrictions in our day-to-day lives, but God’s work is on-going. The need for the gospel is greater than ever, and OM workers are responding creatively to make His name known.

In September, nine participants from across the world logged in online to join a virtual Missions Discipleship Training (MDT) hosted from the UK – the first ever MDT Live! The three-month intensive training focuses on nurturing and equipping participants to confidently share their faith across cultures whilst discovering their own place in God’s plan for His world.

MDT Live! is an innovative and creative response to the challenging times we find ourselves in,” says Matthew Skirton, UK chief executive of OM. “For many, this training is where a life-long commitment to serving God and making His name known begins. The need for well-equipped, highly motivated and spiritual people from this generation to be part of God’s mission has never been greater!”

Community is a core element of MDT, but can this be maintained for a virtual course? “We rave about community, the students rave about community,” says Arthur Magahy, who co-runs MDT in the UK with his wife, Nicky. A virtual classroom will, inevitably, be distinct in nature. Arthur however is quick to emphasise that investing in the participants personally and finding ways to encourage connection and relationship to develop within the group will be a high priority.
