Ephesians 4:11-12 says, “So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up…” (NIV).

For the first year, TeenStreet (TS) held an Equip Day for all Service Team members! Relationships, empowerment and impact are at the heart of what we do at TS and how we want to do it. We believe that when we are in the right relationship with God and others, when we are empowered by the Holy Spirit and our leaders, we can have a big impact on the people and communities around us. It is the Leadership Team’s hope that this Equip Day will be a launch for the Service Team into living out these values at TS and beyond.

Gideon (Netherlands), who shares the TS programme director role with his wife, explained the importance of this day: “When you’re shown why your role is important, you do your role differently. As a Service Team, we want to show the teens what it’s like to honour God. The spiritual side of TS is just as important as the job itself.”

In addition to worshipping God together, Service Team members had the opportunity to attend a range of seminars and workshops, so they could be empowered in their walk with God and guided in living a missional lifestyle, regardless of their location.

There were workshops for every level of role on the Service Team, from supervisor to practical workers to those who are at a turning point in life. The heart of each seminar reached deeper than one’s involvement at TS.

“In the session ‘Serving Through Worship,’” Rachel (20, Ireland) shared, “they were talking about how—even when you’re playing an instrument—you can be aware of what’s happening around you and finding a way to serve and honour God through that. It’s not about you, even if you’re good at it.”

“It’s not just about TS,” Gideon said. “You go home afterwards, and life goes on. We’d like to challenge everyone to put what you hear [at TS] into practice out there. TS is great and fun, but it’s only two weeks of your life. There are 50 other weeks in the year that you can be you, [following what you’re passionate about and living out your faith]. You don’t have to be a missionary to talk about Jesus. You can study to become a lawyer, and in that role you can be a missionary.”

Everything the Service Team does is for the teens, to give them a great experience. While giving of themselves for others, it’s important to take the time to build each other up and value the service that everyone does.

Ger van Veen (TS Europe director) concluded the Equip Day Main Hall with this thought: “We want to live life like shining stars. We shine, not because we do something well or have spotlights on us. We shine because we reflect God’s light.”
