Heavy fighting broke out between rivalling military forces in Sudan on 15 April 2023. Today, more than half of the country’s population needs humanitarian aid and protection, according to UN estimates.
OM has 131 national colleagues in Sudan, who are affected by this crisis.
“The biggest problem is the lack of food and water. Looting continues both in markets and in homes. Hospitals are closed because they don’t have electricity, medicines and medical staff,” shared Ibrahim*, a Sudanese national who leads OM’s work there.
OM is supporting our national colleagues in this crisis and helping them provide relief for those in most need. At the same time, almost half a million Sudanese have fled into the surrounding countries. The main streams of refugees are arriving in Egypt, Chad and South Sudan. OM workers and partners in countries bordering Sudan have already started to reach out to Sudanese refugees, listening to their stories and providing practical support.
“The fighting in Sudan is not coming to an end, but rather intensifying, and in some places turning into tribal conflict as well. In spite of political efforts and promises, there is no solution visible in reality yet – rather, things are getting ever more complicated. The humanitarian situation is catastrophic by now… The suffering of people is truly heart-breaking,” said Tom*, the leader of OM’s work in the Middle East and North Africa.
Please pray for the safety of all citizens in harm’s way, for God’s provision of basic needs such as drinking water and food, and for an immediate stop to the fighting in Sudan.
Give now to support our brothers and sisters in Sudan and help alleviate suffering in Jesus’ name.
